In the coal-mining industry, more than 300 mines are operated in three coal-mining regions Ukraine produces only 5 5 million tons of its own oil, but the ramified network of oil pipelines supports the operation of 10 petroleum plants. The Ukrainian gas pipelines transport the Russian gas to Central and Western Europe. 

The Ukrainian Society for Non-Destructive Testing and Technical Diagnostics (US NDT TD) was established at the meeting of the leading experts of the country, on October 28, 1990, The aim of the Society s activity is consolidation of the efforts of scientists and engineers for development of their creative and business activity, information exchange, satisfying the professional interests, development of international contacts on NDT TD. 

The seminars in Slavsk, exhibitions in Kiev and Dniperopetrovsk have already become traditional. The first Ukrainian Scientific-Technical Conference on Technical Diagnostics and Non-Destructive Testing in Ukraine was held in September 1994 in Dniepropetrovsk. More than 200 specialists participated in the Conference, an exhibition was held, and 80 presentations were made... 

The exhibition of non-destructive testing means, NDT services and NDT publications was held during the Conference, in which 22 companies, including 12 Ukrainian companies participated. 

It was decided to hoW the 3rd Ukrainian Conference on Non-Destructive Testing and Technical Diagnostics in 1999. 

The Ukrainian Research Institute of Pipes and Metallurgy Automation Research Institute have effective developments in the field of NDT in metallurgy (pipes and rolled stock). Other organisations were experts are working with success in the NDT field are ... 

Unfortunately, the main European companies which are working in the NDT field, do not show any activity in promoting in the Ukrainian market the high-technology NDT equipment for upgrading the NDT practices We welcome those who are starting to work in Ukraine, as our industry requires the advanced NDT technologies and equipment.

Tlie current conference is organised by Analytical Scientific Council at Academy of Sciences of Ukraine under collaboration with European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences (EuClicMS) and sponsored by Intemational Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (lUPAC) and by the Intemational Association for the Promotion of Co-operation with Scientists from the New Independent States of the Eormer Soviet Union (INTAS). 

Main goals of the conference are to survey a status of modern analytical science in Ukraine against the global one, to renew intemational collaboration of Ukrainian analytical chemists and educators, and to approach positions of scientists and analytical engineers. 

All main aspects of analytical and bioanalytical sciences is covered by the conference program. AC CA-05 consists of 12 invited lectures and seven symposia General Aspects of Analytical Chemistry, Analytical Methods, Objects of the Analysis,. Sensors and Tests, Separation and Pre-concentration, Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis, History and Methodology of Analytical Chemistry. Conference program includes two special symposia Memorial one, dedicated to Anatoly Babko and Analytical Russian-Germany-Ukrainian symposium (ARGUS-9). 

It is great that AC CA-05 took place in 2005. This year Ukraine demonstrates Eurointegration policy and we are in the vanguard of this process. In 2004 Analytical Chemistry Council NAS of Ukraine becomes a member of European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences. AC CA-05 is the next step towards Eurointegration of Ukrainian analytical science. The first steps are always hard to make. We tried to do our best... In October, 2005 the Ukrainian scientific community will celebrate the centenary of the birth of the outstanding Ukrainian scientist, Anatoly K. Babko for his expertise in analytical chemistry and in the chemistry of complex compounds. 

The scientific work of Anatoly K. Babko was conducted mainly at the Kyiv. State University where he chaired the Department of Analytical Chemistry as from 1944 to 1960, after when during 1960 to 1968 he retained the title of Professor. His scientific duties were performed primarily at the Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, where he headed the Department of Analytical Chemistry from 1941 to 1968.

The methods, which allow in one procedure of analysis to overcome, for example, most pesticides which are used in agricultural practice in the present time, get development and introduction in practice. The contribution of the Ukrainian scientists in field of chromatographic analysis of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs, chlorinated hydrocarbons, PCB s) and supertoxicants, such as PCDDs, is estimated. 

Presently efforts of Ukrainian scientists in field of analysis of toxic organic substances directed on harmonization of the developed methods of analysis with the requirements of international standards and on wide introduction in practice of the quality control system in chromatographic researches.

On basis of developed criteria, the theoretical background of reference substances elaboration is developed, and also ai e developed procedures of elaboration and documentation system for the Ukrainian State Phamiacopoeia RS and for working RS of the phamiaceutical plants. These approaches ai e successfully applied to elaboration of RS for inter-laboratory testing. 

More than 200 species of the Ukrainian State Pharmacopoeia RS ai e certificated, which are used by all types of Ukrainian pharmaceutical laboratories, and also in countries of former USSR.

Brown received his PhD. in 1938 from the University of Chicago, taught at Chicago and at Wayne State University, and then became professor of chemistry at Purdue University. The author of more than 1000 scientific papers, he received the 1979 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his work on organoboranes.
