The facilities for experimental work were poor, with inadequate wet laboratory space. In our discussions, I mentioned to Kaprielian my interest in significantly extending my previous work into the area of hydrocarbon chemistry. I felt that by establishing a strong program of basic research and graduate education in hydrocarbon chemistry, USC could become a leader in this important field. Because the memory of the first Arab oil embargo was still fresh, this struck a chord with Kaprielian, who felt that he could sell my research interest to the trustees and establish a Hydrocarbon Research Institute at USC that could accommodate me, as well as other chemistry faculty members whose interests could fit into its framework.

This book was produced under the auspices of the Dyers Company Publications Trust. The Trust was instituted by the Worshipful Company of Dyers of the City of London in 1971 to encourage the publication of textbooks and other aids to learning in the science and technology of colour and coloration and related fields. The Society of Dyers and Colourists acts as trustee to the fund. 

In accordance with the German "laws" then in existence, the "trustees" were permitted to allot 500 Zloty per month to the Jews who had been robbed of their property, and for each family. But Schwab allotted only 500 Zloty for all three families, that is, for myself and my wife whose aged mother was still with her for my married daughter and her husband, and for my sick son who was in a sanitarium. Then I had to pay 150 Zloty to I.G. for so-called rent even one family could not live on the lowest standard on only 350 Zloty a month. 

Dr. M. Szpilfogel has sent me the enclosed letter dated 16 January. This constitutes a part of the duties which fall on you as a result of your appointment as a trustee. I must, therefore, leave it entirely up to you to do what you see fit in this matter, t refrain from taking any position on my part. You will be good enough to advise Dr. Szpilfogel directly of your decision. 

In trying to grab the other companies, Von Schnitzler met the government opposition cleverly. He did not seek immediate control he suggested that the Economic Ministry appoint Farben men as "trustees for the Reich," with authority to "continue the works or to close them and make use of the stocks of raw materials, intermediates, and finished products." Von Schnitzler pointed out that 85 per cent of coal tar and intermediates produced by Farben for the Nazi war machine came from Ludwigshafen in western Germany. Strategy demanded that Farben find safer eastern plants such as these in Poland. 

Still, the Ministry of Economics would not appoint Von Schnitzler. On September 29 they did appoint two less powerful Farben men as commissars of the three dyestuffs companies. The Ministry made it clear that these men were hired to act as "Reich trustees," but immediately the I.G. Vorstand referred to the two as "Farben trustees." These were the men, Schwab and Schoner, who had come to call on Dr. Szpilfogel. 

With Farben men in the three strategic companies, Von Schnitzler directed an all-out campaign to acquire lesser Polish firms. Reports had come in that there were several chemical plants at Poznan, Poland. Von Schnitzler1 s lust for plunder was not appeased for want of a name. The minutes of the full commercial committee in October stated that a Farben lawyer, Diessmann, "on his way back to Warsaw, will be directed to call at Poznan on the Chief of Civil Administration, to clarity the appointment of a trustee for the biggest chemical industrial plant there — which plant involved is not yet knpwn."...

In 1992, we bundled these programs together into a package called The Geochemist s Workbench which is owned by The Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois and can be licensed inexpensively for educational or commercial purposes. Within a few months of its completion the software was in use at dozens of universities and companies around the world. 

Sequester means to confiscate, seize or take control of something to prevent its further use. The word comes from the Latin sequester, meaning a trustee or agent whose job was to seize property. 

The inverse of the right-hand side of Equation (3.6) is known in economics as the sinking fund deposit factor, that is, how much a borrower must periodically deposit with a trustee to eventually pay off a loan.

Born in Vienna, Austria, on May 3, 1895, Professor Herman Mark is as vital today as his almost innumerable contributions to polymer science. He continues to maintain an active schedule as a world traveler and lecturer at numerous national and international symposia and seminars. His home base, however, remains at Polytechnic Institute of New York, where he is Dean Emeritus and an emeritus member of the Board of Trustees.
