Born in Vienna, Austria, on May 3, 1895, Professor Herman Mark is as vital today as his almost innumerable contributions to polymer science. He continues to maintain an active schedule as a world traveler and lecturer at numerous national and international symposia and seminars. His home base, however, remains at Polytechnic Institute of New York, where he is Dean Emeritus and an emeritus member of the Board of Trustees. 

Mark s international prestige was assured before he immigrated to Brooklyn in 1940, but it was his second career, that of world traveler and "Johnny Appleseed" of polymer science, which has made him the patriarch of the discipline. This new, yet not so different, Mark was created by the increased managerial and editorial responsibilities he voluntarily assumed after the Second World War. 

Although she was a brilliant medical researcher, Menten s enthusiasm overflowed beyond the boundaries of science. She was a world traveller, a mountain climber, a musician, and a student of languages. She was even a painter, whose work made its way into art exhibitions.

Srinivasan had contributed much to knowledge of electrochemical energy conversion in these several appointments when he found the most opportunity-filled position in the Center for Electrochemical Studies and Hydrogen Research at Texas A M University. The director of the center, A. John Appleby, found that his position turned him into a world traveller to such an extent that Srinivasan became, in effect, the day-to-day director of the center.

Let s take an example. The quintessential Barbie doll is 52 years old. In 1959, the doll was made locally and shipped directly to stores. Over the years, the source of manufacturing has changed. For 23 years, it was made in Japan. Production then shifted to Mexico, and then seven years in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Manufacturing was then changed to be sourced in Korea and the Philippines. Today, the primary manufacturing is in China, Malaysia, and Indonesia, but the component parts to assemble a doll are manufactured in 22 countries and assembled in the market where the doll is sold. In 2012, Barbie is a world traveler. 

Immunization against some agents such as influenza viruses, which undergo yearly changes, will probably involve some form of combination vaccines, incorporating proteins that are common to most major strains of the virus. The simplicity of world travel in the twenty-first century means scientists must take a worldview of new strains, as an outbreak in a few countries can rapidly develop into a worldwide pandemic. 

Instead, I would like to comment very briefly on a few aspects of Herman Mark s career — his world travels, the title of Geheimrat bestowed by his colleagues, and just a few of his many accomplishments.
