Scatterplots graphically provide a representation of the correlation in terms of the strength and direction (inverse relationship versus positive). Scatterplot A represents a positive correlation. As the values along the horizontal axis increase, the corresponding values on the vertical axis also increase. Scatterplot B on the other hand represents a negative or inverse relationship. As the values on the horizontal axis increase, the corresponding values on the vertical axis decrease. 

Moving away from the 0 in either direction, the strength of the association increases. As the points on a scatterplot approach a straight line, the correlation coefficient approaches 1.00. Scatterplot B represents a strong negative correlation. Scatterplots that range between a perfectly straight line and a circular cloud can then represent correlations between 0 and 1.00. Scatterplot C can depict a moderate positive correlation.
