Location of the system boundaries also is important in the net energy analysis of integrated biomass energy systems. Thus tractors may be used to plant and harvest biomass. The fuel requirements of the tractors are certainly part of E, but is the energy expended in manufacturing the tractors also part of E Some analysts beheve that a complete study should trace all materials of constmction and fossil fuels used back to their original locations in the ground. [Pg.38]

The most common VI improvers are methacrylate polymers and copolymers, acrylate polymers (see Acrylic ester polymers), olefin polymers and copolymers, and styrene—butadiene copolymers. The degree of VI improvement from these materials is a function of the molecular weight distribution of the polymer. VI improvers are used in engine oils, automatic transmission fluids, multipurpose tractor fluids, hydrautic fluids, and gear lubricants. Their use permits the formulation of products that provide satisfactory lubrication over a much wider temperature range than is possible using mineral oils alone. [Pg.265]

Hydrostatic Transmissions. The most recent use of hydrauhc power has been in hydrostatic transmissions which are used in many self-propelled harvesting machines and garden tractors and in large tractors and constmction machines. Apphcations in tmcks for highway operation also are being developed. No clutch is used and no gear shifting is involved, thus this type of transmission could be called automatic, but in all other respects the hydrostatic transmission has no similarity to the hydrokinetic automatic transmission (16). [Pg.270]

Machines. A machine is a device which is capable of manufactuting a product or completing a task such as removing hydrocarbon contaminants from siUca and dirt. Examples of machines iaclude an extmsion apparatus, a book biader, and a tractor. The U.S. Patent No. 5,020,462 tided "Thermal Remediation Apparatus and Method" (3) discloses both a machine and a process. [Pg.30]

Less mechanization is used on smaller tracts of individually owned land, where the terrain is mountainous or otherwise difficult to reach, or where thinning as opposed to clear-cutting is the preferred silvicultural practice. The harvesting operation maybe done by the landowner or small contractor using chainsaws and tractors. In some operations where minimal damage to the forest is critical, horses may be used. Sale of pulpwood to the mill operation is usually through dealers. [Pg.255]

The actual weight that the truck can cany in the United States depends on state-highway load limits, which in turn depend on the net vehicle weight and the number of axles on the tnu (and tractor, when a trailer arrangement is used). The accepted maximum combined total weight of vehicle and cargo is 36,200 kg (80,000 lb). In some states, this is reduced slightly, while in others it is exceeded. [Pg.1982]

Tractor-trailer systems. The apphcation of trac tor trailers is similar to that for tilt-frame-container systems. The use of a separate trac tor increases the number of axles and the net weight of waste that can be hauled. Tractor trailers are better for the collection of especially heavy rubbish, such as sand, timber, and metal scrap, and they are often are used for the collection of demolition wastes at construction sites. [Pg.2237]

Another auxiliaiy unloading system that has proven to be very effective and efficient involves the use of moveable, hydraulically operated truck dumps located at the disposal site. Operationally, the trailer is backed up onto one of the tipping ramps, with or without its tractor. The back of the trailer is opened, and the unit is then tilted upward until the wastes fall out by gravity. The time required for the entire unloading operation typically is about 5 min per trip. [Pg.2241]

This note applies to roadhaulage only. Haulers may subcontract the haulage, or employ independent traction (driver/tractor) or employ interim drivers. A written policy is expected, detailing what criteria have to be met in such cases, and at what stage the client is to be informed about the use of subcontractors. [Pg.194]

Preventive maintenance on vital equipment, such as tractor units, tanks, pumps, hoses, hard arms, pipelines, and mooring facilities, should be properly scheduled, carried out and documented. This program should be separate from the regulatory inspection. Verify from records. [Pg.197]

The methacrylic polymer remains a useful glazing material. In aircraft applications it is used extensively on aircraft which fly at speeds less than Mach 1.0. They form the familar bubble body of many helicopters. On land, acrylic sheet is useful for coach roof lights, motor cycle windscreens and in do-it yourself cabins for tractors and earth-moving equipment. Injection mouldings are frequently used for plaques on the centre of steering wheels and on some fascia panelling. [Pg.412]
