Construction Procedure. Paving with a sulfur—asphalt hot mix is exactly the same as with asphalt. Conventional dump trucks are used to haul the hot mix from the asphalt plant to the road. There the mix is spread with standard pavement equipment and compacted with conventional rollers. Measurements on the completed pavements verify that sulfur asphalt mixes have good workability and are virtually indistinguishable from conventional asphalt. [Pg.130]

Pillow tanks, constructed of polymers and heavy fabrics, are usually used to store oil recovered on land. These are placed on a solid platform so that rocks cannot puncture the tank when full. Oil recovered on land is often stored in stationary tanks built for other purposes, and in dump trucks and modular containers, lined with plastic. Haulage is a major variable cost in producing limestone products. The most widely used vehicle for hauling rock from the quarry face to the primary crusher is the rigid-bodied dump truck, which is available in sizes ranging from 15 to over 150 tonnes capacity. Articulated dump trucks are more manoeuvrable and are often favoured in smaller quarries. [Pg.35]

A relatively recent trend is to install in-pit crushers (Fig. 4.7). These may be fed directly from the quarry face by rubber-tyred shovels in a load-and-carry operation. The crushed rock is transported to the processing plant by conveyers, which generally have lower capital and operating costs than dump trucks. [Pg.35]

However, the greatest tonnage of limestone is stored on the ground in uncovered stockpiles. Most stockpiles are fed by an elevated conveyer, resulting in a conical shape. Radial elevated conveyers can service three or four stockpiles, each consisting of a different grade of stone. Alternatively, stone can be transported to the stockpile by dump truck or shovel. [Pg.50]

Hot materials, such as asphalt, can cause serious thermal bums if contacted with parts of the body. The television show Rescue 911 highhghted a rescne operation that involved hot asphalt. A dump truck used to haul solid hot asphalt to patch holes in the road collided with a car. As a result of the collision, the load of hot asphalt was dumped into the car, covering the driver to the point that he conld not escape. Before rescuers could remove the driver, he suffered severe second- and third-degree thermal bums from the hot asphalt. [Pg.382]

In many metropolitan areas, the RCM source is from existing Portland cement concrete curb, sidewalk and driveway sections that may or may not be lightly reinforced. The RCM is usually removed with a backhoe or pay loader and is loaded into dump trucks for removal from the site. The RCM excavation may include 10-30% sub-base soil material and asphalt pavement. Therefore, the RCM is not pure Portland cement concrete, but a mixture of concrete, soil, and small quantities of bituminous concrete [159-161]. [Pg.84]

The plant design allows for the future construction of a conveyor to carry the washed oxide directly to the concentrate storage shed. At present, the washed oxide falls into a dump truck that the operator empties once or twice a shift. The haul trucks can be standard or semitrailer end-dump trucks, horizontal-discharge trucks or bottom-dump trailers. The end-dump trucks are the ones most commonly used throughout the world. The capacity of the standard end-dump truck is usually up to 20 tonnes, while the capacity of the semitrailer truck can go up to usually 25 tonnes. Most conventional land-based contractors equipment can be employed on the shore-based aspects of coastal and maritime works (Figures 5.1 to 5.3). Normal safety risk assessment applies to the use of this equipment, but some items of plant and their use require specific site-based consideration. An example of this is the use of dump trucks on beaches. This particular equipment is susceptible to variable ground conditions and can easily overturn if a patch of soft sand is hit. [Pg.75]
