The key to all this is that the scale of measurement of most (if not all) variables is arbitrary. Although we are most familiar with a linear scale of measurement, there is nothing which makes this the correct scale on its own, as opposed to a logarithmic scale [familiar logarithmic measurements are that of pH values, or earthquake intensity (Richter scale)]. Transforming a set of data (converting X to X ) is really as simple as changing a scale of measurement.

Figure 5 illustrates the measured data values as well as the data converted to absorptance and transmittance. There are a number of implications of Eq. (43) for deconvolution, and we shall discuss each of these in turn.

The Qualitative Substructure Model of Niemi and coworkers was developed by using a BOD database with BOD data converted to half-lives by assuming, for example, that a theoretical BOD of 50% or greater in 5 days had a half-life of 5 days and a 25% theoretical BOD in 10 days had a half-life of 20 days. Using these data, they identified structural features associated with chemicals that degraded or were persistent (see Table 12.7).

In order to evaluate the relative importance of factors other than size and how they may help explain the observed variations in grazing rates, we compiled the available quantitative data, converted them into carbon units, and performed a series of correspondence and cluster analyses described below.

WATEQ2 consists of a main program and 12 subroutines and is patterned similarly to WATEQF ( ). WATEQ2 (the main program) uses input data to set the bounds of all major arrays and calls most of the other procedures. INTABLE reads the thermodynamic data base and prints the thermodynamic data and other pertinent information, such as analytical expressions for effect of temperature on selected equilibrium constants. PREP reads the analytical data, converts concentrations to the required units, calculates temperature-dependent coefficients for the Debye-HKckel equation, and tests for charge balance of the input data. SET initializes values of individual species for the iterative mass action-mass balance calculations, and calculates the equilibrium constants as a function of the input temperature. MAJ EL calculates the activity coefficients and, on the first iteration only, does a partial speciation of the major anions, and performs mass action-mass balance calculations on Li, Cs, Rb, Ba, Sr and the major cations. TR EL performs these calculations on the minor cations, Mn, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Ni, Ag, and As. SUMS performs the anion mass...

Example 10-4 Coenan has reported rates of hydrogenation of sesame seed oil with a nickel-on-silica catalyst in a slurry reactor. Hydrogen was added at the bottom of a small cylindrical vessel equipped with stator and stirrer blades. Initial rates of reaction were measured as function of catalyst concentration at 180°C, a stirrer speed of 75G rpm, atmospheric pressure, and a hydrogen rate of 60 liters/hr. The data, converted to global rates in terms of g moles/(min)(cm oil), are given in Table 10-6 (based on an oil density of 0.9 g/cm ). Estimate kiaJH from these data. Comment on the importance of the resistance of hydrogen to solution in the oil and estimate what the reaction rate would be if this resistance could be eliminated for a catalyst concentration of 0.07% Ni in oil.
