The inverted search process, in conjunction with modern developments in computing, lends itself to on-line information retrieval. The librarian-information officer, or even the scientist himself, sits at a typewriter terminal connected, over telephone lines, to the computer. He explores the dictionary, establishes the search formulation, and then the computer searches for the references and prints them out before his eyes. In the USA this service is known as MEDLINE and is the main means of access to the MEDLARS data base. The impact that the telephone industry has had on government, industry, commerce, and on individual lives cannot be overemphasized. Instead of going to a library, many people do research on the Internet. Rather than going to a theater, many people watch films at home (or wherever they and their laptops or smartphones are). Rather than staying near a telephone to avoid missing a call, people can take the telephone with them. The cost of telephone communications have continued to drop. It is estimated that a telephone call to the other side of the world will cost less than 1 cent per minute. 

An excellent home family preparedness measure is to identify a distant relative or friend who can be the emergency message center. Employees maybe able to call a relative from work to find out their family is safe and sound. Disasters that impair telephone communications teach us that it is often possible to make and receive long distance calls when a call across the street will not get through. Business emergency planners should not overlook this hint. A location in another city, or a key customer or supplier may make a good out-of-area emergency contact. 

Electronic communication. One of the most dramatic changes in the last decade has been the rapid advance of electronic mail, internet and computer use. This has enormously speeded up communication and expanded the options for presentation, but it has also increased the problems of overload. Electronic commimication has the advantages lliat it is less limited in time and space than face-to-face or telephone communication. E-mail can also be very informal. Well-designed internet and computer-based information is, however, costly and time-consuming to produce. 

The problem was eventually addressed by a focus group set up by a transportation association representing many of the western coal operators. An early determination was that the mine producers and their utility customers had differing expectations about loading and delivering the coal. As a first step toward a better system, a monthly reporting system was put into place, based on e-mail, fax, and telephone communication among the involved parties. With this data, the railroad then attempted to reconcile the supply plans for coal with the demand plans from the utilities to assure the correct number of dedicated train sets was established. The flow of the coal supply was smoothed and many of the bottlenecks were eliminated for about 25% of the utilities involved. 

The closest contact must be maintained with the fire, police, ambulance and health authorities, together with the Health and Safety Executive and local authority. A mutual aid scheme involving neighbouring premises is best undertaken at this stage. A major emergency may involve a failm-e in the supply of gas, electricity, water and/or telephone communications. Discussions with the appropriate authority will help to determine priorities in reestablishing supply. 

Information Technology. The tools for optimized information utilization are constantly changing. The latest wave of improvements includes tools such as the Internet, which allows the interface with international suppliers and customers wireless systems, which allow transportability and RFID, which allows immediate and accurate identification without the use of scanning tools. The upcoming wave will include tools such as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), which is basically a telephone communication system using the Internet at significantly cheaper Internet costs. 

Other training needs would be patrol or station procedures, customer service, telephone communications, and other skills not necessarily related specifically to the trade, but for events that could impact the organization. For example, when staff answer the telephone or give instructions to visitors, they must sound (and appear) professional. Answering the phone with Yeah, what can I do for you is quite informal and may present a negative impression of the organization. Proper procedures should be identified and taught to all personnel.
