Planning supply

The challenge in supply planning is that specifically the available production quantities per month can depend on the schedule of the products on a specific resource if change-overs consume significant time so that the overall capacity error in die rough-cut master plan would not be acceptable. Therefore, supply network planning includes also the aspect of hierarchical planning, where production quantities based on a discrete monthly... 

There are 12 producers of ethylene oxide in the United States. Table 9 shows the plant locations, estimated capacities, and types of processes employed. The total U.S. production capacity for 1992 was ca 3.4 x 106 metric tons. The percentages of total domestic production made by the air- and oxygen-based processes are ca 20 and 80%, respectively. The largest producer is Union Carbide Corp. with approximately one-third of the United States ethylene oxide capacity. About 94% of domestic ethylene oxide capacity is located on the Gulf Coast near secure and plentiful ethylene supplies. Plans for additional U.S. production in the 1990s have been announced by Union Carbide (incremental expansions), Formosa Plastics (at Pt. Comfort, Texas), and Shell (at Geismar, Louisiana) (101).

Another type of external uncertainty emerges from the suppliers side. Suppliers comprise all partners providing raw and intermediate materials which are not part of the considered chemical production network. Prom these external partners materials are suppUed to keep the production network working. Uncertainties affect the network s performance when orders cannot be fulfilled in the expected way. E.g. shipments arrive too late or not in the expected quantities. Such uncertainty can hardly be avoided, but has to be reflected in safety stocks and strategic supply planning. 

A 400 million upgrade to Nike s supply chain systems resulted in 100 million in lost sales and a 20 percent stock dip. The reason given by Philip Knight, then Nike s chairman and CEO, was "complications arising from the impact of implementing our new demand and supply planning systems and processes.
