Focus group

If you do not listen to people, you cannot expect them to listen to you. Communication is a two-way activity. Do not make assumptions about what people know, think, or want done about risks. Take the time to find out what people are thinking. Often, people are more concerned about issues such as trust, credibility, competence, control, voluntariness, fairness, and compassion than about mortality statistics and the details of QRA. Use techniques such as interviews, focus groups, and surveys to gauge what people are thinking.

A number of alternative sizing methods are available, and these are described in Table 8. The American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, Inhalation Focus Group conducted a comprehensive review of available methods, which was published in a series of articles identified in the last column of the table. Most companies will purchase a range of datasets from a variety of commercial companies who specialise in collecting and collating such data. The sources of information are wide and varied and includes panels of GPs and specialists who record what they are prescribing and for what indication, to information from wholesalers and pharmacists. Companies will also sponsor individual market research studies with questionnaires and face-to-face interviews with individual panels of doctors or focus groups. 

Focused drug use evaluation (drug utilization review) can be done to identify problems concerning the use of specific medicines or the treatment of specific diseases, particularly in hospitals. The qualitative methods employed in social science (e.g. focus group discussion, in-depth interviews, structured observation and structured questionnaires), can be used to investigate the motives underlying irrational use. All data collected should be used to design interventions and to measure the impact of those interventions on medicine use. 

The approach taken by practitioners in dealing with parental drug problems as they impact on child welfare and child protection forms Chapter 9. The nine focus groups convened were each made up of three or four practitioners (n=35). They acknowledged their limited access to families and reliance upon other practitioners, particularly health visitors, to keep a watching brief With regard to services offered by drug workers they could see the merits of a division of labour in working with parents and children ...
