An overview of HPLC instrumentation, operating principles, and recent advances or trends that are pertinent to pharmaceutical analysis is provided in Chapter 3 for the novice and the more experienced analyst. Modern liquid chromatographs have excellent performance and reliability because of the decades of refinements driven by technical advances and competition between manufacturers in a two billion-dollar-plus equipment market. References to HPLC textbooks, reference books, review articles, and training software have been provided in this chapter. Rather than summarizing the current literature, the goal is to provide the reader with a concise overview of HPLC instrumentation, operating principles, and recent advances or trends that lead to better analytical performance. Two often-neglected system parameters—dwell volume and instrumental bandwidth—are discussed in more detail because of their impact on fast LC and small-bore LC applications.

This book reviews the technical literature on carbodiimides with emphasis on the last decades of the old century and the new century. The carbodiimides are subdivided into alkyl and aryl isocyanates, which cover a major portion of the book. 

Due to the intrinsic characteristics of flow analysis mentioned above, more and more attention is being given to this family of techniques. This is reflected in the numerous articles, books, reviews, and conference proceedings that have been published on flow analysis (see e.g.. Appendices 1.1 and 1.2). The selected toxicology review in Appendix A is a distillation of material in a technical book on pesticide residues which I recently published. Since this reviewed, referenced, and edited material was completed in 1995, it provides a timely overview of pesticide toxicology. I thank my coauthors, Drs. Nicholas P. Cheremisinoff is a consultant to industry, international lending institutions and donor agencies on pollution prevention and responsible environmental care practices. With a career spanning more than 30 years, he is also the author, co-author or editor of more than 150 technical books and hundreds of state of the art review and scientific articles. He received his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in chemical engineering from Clarkson College of Technology. 

ACS also publishes books that are not part of any particular series. These include reference, data, and reprint volumes as well as books that are semi-technical or nontechnical. Often these books appeal to a broader audience than the technical books. Most of these books undergo stringent peer review. 

Since punch-and-die presses of various designs are widely used in the pharmaceutical industry and represent the most important equipment for the manufacturing of solid dosage forms, many books have been published on the subject in essentially all languages around the world. It exceeds the context of this book to go into more detail. Rather, the specialized literature should be sought and reviewed, which can be obtained from the pharmaceutical associations existing in all major countries, from international sellers of academic, scientific, and technical books that can be found on the Internet, and from vendors (Section 15.1). The books cited by the author [B.6, B.34, B.41, B.48, B.66, B.97, B.99, B.105] are those that are in his personal library. 

As best I could determine, during his career, he and those in his laboratory published 276 research papers in the peer-reviewed literature. In addition, he authored or co-authored 106 review articles, book chapters, encyclopedia articles, and methods 26 book reviews and 16 non-technical or less-technical articles about realized and potential industrial uses of polysaccharides and agricultural crops and residues. 

Most technical books have a limited shelf life, with a limited production run made by the publisher. Review copies are typically sent to a number of journals and trade press for write-up and promotion. A few publishers keep extra copies of published technical books for a period of time, typically until the inventory runs low, at which time the rest of the books are sold at discount to mass marketers. Finding copies of older technical books is like finding the lost treasure of the Incas, and the rule is Buy it when you find it.

Technical progress and implementation of microstmctured reactors (microreactors) have been described by an increasing number of publications over the past two decades. A number of book reviews [1-3] and dedicated conferences [4,5] have documented the progress in reactor development and chemical synthesis employing microreactors. The term microreactor usually defines a piece of equipment whose active components, that is, the structures in which mixing or a reaction occurs, are typically in the size range between 1 and 2000 [xm. These structural dimensions allow for well-defined continuous-flow conditions while the reactor unit itself is not necessarily on a micro- or millimeter scale [1,6]. 

The field of general chemistry includes publications of most of the world s chemical societies. These journals deal with all aspects of chemistry, reporting original work of research, and carry important book reviews. Annales de Chimie (Paris, 1789-) is a very important French journal which publishes a large number of university dissertations, general articles, reviews, papers on technical aspects of applied chemistry, abstracts, book reviews and news of French and other scientific conferences.
