No national listing of academic dissertations is at present prepared. L. New-combe, in a report of the Proceedings of the Sixteenth Coriference of the Association of Special Libraries and Information Bureaux, discusses the accessibility of British university thesis literature in 1939. En and, Wales, Ireland, and Scotland are covered. Newcombe lists British universities together with names of publications which list titles or give abstracts of university dissertations.

While individuals able to attract national attention continued to speak to the paper problem, a collective voice was still to be heard. Seeking an improvement in newsprint, the American Library Association (ALA) formed a Committee on the Deterioration of Newsprint Paper in 1911 (3). The committee worked with the American Newspaper Publishers Association in surveying publishers concerning the possibility of special library editions. Some positive responses were received, but when the ALA committee surveyed libraries, they found most were interested only in permanent files of local papers. The committee concluded that special newspaper editions were possible, if libraries were willing to pay for such editions. Perhaps as a result of the consciousness raising of this...

Separate Numerical Patent Indexes with CA abstract numbers were published for the periods 1907 to 1936 (CA Volumes 1-30) (by the Special Libraries Association) and 1937 to 1946 (CA Volumes 31-40) and 1947 to 1956 (CA Volumes 41-50) (by the American Chemical Society), respectively. Numerical Patent Indexes became part of CA Collective Indexes from the sixth Cl onward (1957 to 1961). The CA Patent Concordance was started in 1963, and merged with the Numerical Patent Index in 1981 to form the Patent Index.

Table courtesy of Consultants Bureau and the National Science Foundation, which calls attention to two main translation depositories in the United States (1) the Special Libraries Association Translation Center located at the John Crerar Library in Chicago and (2) the Office of Technical Services, Technical Information Division, in the Department of Commerce, Washington, D. C. 

Translations List. This list, which is issued monthly, announces both completed translations and translations in process. Each issue contains an author index, and cumulative indexes are issued at frequent intervals. Gontributors include the AEG and its contractors and the British, Ganadian, and French atomic energy agencies. AEG translations have deposited at the Special Library Association Translation Genter of John Grerar Library, Ghicago, 111., since the center was established. Since January 1959, the translations have been sold by OTS.

Two types of translation service are offered by Crerar Library. The first, growing rapidly in scope, is the SLA (Special Libraries Association) Translations Center. This is a national cooperative depository of translations of scientific and technical papers maintained by Crerar Library under contract with the association. Translations in the center, numbering 50,000 by 1960, are obtainable in photocopies through Photoduplication Service at Crerar Library, or on loan. 

Trandation Monthly, published by Crerar Library for Special Libraries Association. Volumes 1 and 2 (1955 and 1956) included translations of papers from languages other than Russian volumes 4 and 5 (1957 and 1958) included translations from all foreign languages. This publication was discontinued in December 1958. 

A subject index to each of the earlier volumes is available through the Office of Technical Services. The Special Libraries Association has published a Numerical Index to the Bibliography of Scientific and Industrial Reports, Volumes 1 to 10, which lists all the reports by PB number and sells for 10. The Technical Reports Newsletter enables business men and industrial firms to keep posted on new technical reports available from federal and nonconfidential sources. Each issue includes complete instructions on ordering OTS reports. The Newsletter may be purchased as part of the Bibliography. The subscription price which covers both services is 5 per year the Newsletter may be obtained separately at a cost of 50 cents a year.

German, in 1947. A list of the PB numbers of these 22 volumes is available from the OTS (22). The abstracts are grouped by the German Patent Office classification in very broad classes. A subject outline of the classification correlated with the PB volumes and pages on which the abstracts of the patents occur has been prepared ( 3). The German patent classification is also given in an index published by the Special Libraries Association (33).
