Sustainable development description

So far the mainstream thoughts about sustainable development have been described. However, there are other voices, which have a different view on sustainable development and critisize (part of) the Brundtland description. Their general comment is that the Brundtland description stems from an anthropocentric worldview that places man too much at the center. Two other views are the ecocentric and the theocentric Judeo-Christian worldviews. A brief description of each follows, together with their main criticism on the Brundtland view. [Pg.510]

Elaborate descriptions of process intensification will be found elsewhere in this book. Here a short description suffices, followed by an assessment on its potential to contribute to sustainable development, based on present industrial cases and general features. [Pg.520]

From the above given description of critical infrastructure it follows that the critical infrastructure is a system composed of mutually interconnected systems. In this coherence it is important that mutual interconnection means dependence. Safety of each system, imderstood as the set of measures that ensure the safe infrastructure that can sustainable develop of course depends on the infrastructure nature. The system safety inherently includes the system protection. The safety of system that is a set ofmutually dependent subsystems is predetermined not only by safety of individual subsystems but also by character of mutual interconnections. [Pg.1776]

When this definition is considered with the description of waste, it is apparent that any human activity generates both waste and pollution. Differentiation between the two is difficult. It is generally accepted now, that humans must be more efficient in managing their activities on the surface of the planet if there is to be a sustainable development of society and preservation of the quality of life. As a result of past practices, scientific research and an improving understanding of our own impact on the environment, recent legislative changes have meant that industry, often viewed as the primary polluter, is pressurized to clean up and minimize its environmental impact. [Pg.255]

The non-descriptness of sustainable development as a guiding principle can be perceived as a lack sustainability can be discounted as an empty formula, even a container term. Conversely, it may also be seen as an opportunity, even a precondition, to fulfil its function. The different interpretations to which this guiding principle lends itself give it a broad range of points to tie in with. The term s lacking precision, its non-descriptness, can make for a highly creative, diverse, yet dynamic field, which is oriented to a given direction. In open societies, open notions are likely to meet with an echo, and this... [Pg.17]

Introducing a novel and general approach for multi-objective optimization named MOON, in this paper, we have implemented its algorithm as a Web based application. It is unnecessary for everyone to have any particular knowledge about MOP, and to prepare the particular computer environment. They need only a Web browser to submit their problem, and to indicate their subjective preference between the pair of trial solutions generated automatically by the system. Eventually, it can facilitate the decision making from a comprehensive point of view that should be required to pursue the sustainable development in proeess systems. An illustrative description outlines the proposed system and its usage. [Pg.928]

But why should he do that Since rational behavior is indeterminate in equilibrium, it cannot be sustained by rational considerations. And it is hard to see what else could sustain it. It is highly fragile. Not infrequently, all equilibria are of this son. The research and development game discussed in chapter IV is an illustration. In equilibrium, all firms use a randomizing device to decide how much to invest in research and development. It does not take much knowledge of actual Arms to discredit that idea as a description of what they do. Firms must make a decision, one way or another, but we would not expect their decisions to be best responses to each other. [Pg.115]

The general opinion about the aforementioned problems and the ad hoc technical solutions is that they are by no means sufficient. The essential concept when thinking about these subjects nowadays is sustainability. It was greatly helped by the description and definition by the Brundtland report of the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED), Our Common Future (11) ... [Pg.506]

An equally remarkable feature to whidi we shall turn now is the fact that confined fluids may sustain a certain shear stress without exhibiting structural features normally pertaining to solid-like phases that is, they do not necessarily assume any long-range periodic order. We tacitly assumed this from the very beginning of this book in our development of a thermodynamic description of cuiifiiied fluids, wliich closely resembles that appropriate for solid-like bulk phases (see Section 1) (12). [Pg.238]

Chaotic systems. Here the mere notion of synchrony is non-trivial, and several concepts have been developed. The effect of phase synchronization is a direct extension of the classical theory to the case of a subclass of self-sustained continuous time chaotic oscillators which admit a description in terms of phase. Synchronization of these systems can be described as a phase and frequency locking, in analogy to the theory of synchronization of noisy systems. An alternative approach considers a synchronization of arbitrary chaotic systems as a coincidence of their state variables (complete synchronization) or as an onset of a functional relationship between state variables of two unidirection-ally coupled systems (generalized synchronization). Although physical mechanisms behind the two latter phenomena essentially differ from the mechanisms of phase and frequency locking, all these effects constitute the field of application of the modern synchronization theory. [Pg.348]

For a rationalization of the similar physical behavior of liquid clathrate formation with aromatics, for a chemically dissimilar set of materials. Zaworotko et al. suggested that liquid clathrate formation was chiefly dependent on the physical properties of the organic salts, rather than on their chemical natures. Thus, an approach to developing other systems capable of sustaining liquid clathrates would be to investigate organic salts with low melting points (or even salts that were liquid at room temperature). This is clearly a description of ionic liquids. [Pg.805]
