The Voices of Others

This book is a report of the scientific aspects of the disease itself (see Part I What Is MCS ) and a journal of personal experiences and an ethnography of life with MCS (see Part 11 The Personal Situation and Part III The Voices of Others). It contains tips, advice and information in several fields, and important addresses and links for the MCS patient (see Part IV The ABCs of MCS, Part V Films, Books and Other Resources, Part VI Further Resources). In conclusion, Part VII Providing Information to Others, is a guide that may help to inform others. 

In Part III The Voices of Others a section is devoted to the memory of deceased MCS patients. 

If you can no longer go outdoors, it s still very important to entertain yourself with something. Find hobbies that are still possible or pick up the activities that you never got around to but always wanted to do, which you ll have all the time in the world for now. There is more out there than you think. It s often just a matter of realigning your perspectives and learning to look for that which you can still do. The electrical excitability phenomenon, inherent to neural tissues, provides an opportunity to effect external control over many body systems paralyzed limbs can be made to move, the blind can experience visual sensations, the deaf people can experience the voice of others close by or by phone, pain can be alleviated, tremors suppressed, and mental disorders treated. Devices, often referred to as neuroprostheses, that perform these functions can be sold. Companies that make devices that provide the most function with the smallest, safest devices that also have long battery lifetimes usually have the market advantage. Function is directly related to electrode placement improperly placed electrodes don t work or have undesirable side effects. The remedy has been reimplantation, but tunable electrodes, structures with multiple small contacts, are making it possible to avoid additional surgery by providing pathways to manipulate the shape of the excitatory fields. 

Invest in understanding each others proble ms and building relationships capture the voice of other functions and be able to articulate plans in their language, not our jargon... 

These verbal performances seemed to me rather mundane while they were occurring, but relistening to them on audiotape I could see the source of other people s fascination. It was as though my ordinary, rather humdrum personality had simply been turned off and speaking through me was the voice of another, a voice that was steady, unhesitating, and articulate—a voice seeking to inform others about the power and the promise of psychedelic dimensions. 

The laboratoiy shall plan and establish processes to listen to the voice of customer and other interested parties and cooperate with them in order to anticipate future needs. Such information should be collected, analysed and used for improving the laboratoiy performance. Measurements of customer satisfaction as well as personnel satisfaction (within the laboratoiy) are vital for the evaluation of laboratory performance. 

Medical marketing is a balancing act between the commercial interests of the Company and the responsibility as the voice of ethics for the Company. However, in the final analysis it is your responsibility as the Medical Advisor to ensure that the interests of and benefit to the health of the patient take precedence over all other considerations. 

The voices of the HI are easy to ignore, because these voices are often faltering in tone and mixed in message. These voices bespeak conditions. .. that most of us would rather forget our vulnerability to. Listening is hard, but it is also a fundamentally moral act.. .. In listening for the other, we listen for ourselves. The moment of witness in the story crystallizes a mutuality of need, when each is for the other.

Eye hath not seen, nor hath ear heard, neither have entered the heart of any man, how the heaven hath naturally embodied to truth of this Spirit, in it the truth doth stand alone, therefore it is called the voice of truth. To this power Adam and the other patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, owed their bodily health, their long life, and finally prospered in great wealth thereby. 

A fourth problem is the use of other volunteers as the social partner in the social interaction paradigm. The social behaviour of different volunteers would vary. In addition their appearance, voice quality, interests could differ considerably and lead to potential differences in attractiveness. These factors might influence the results, especially on the measurement of rejection. Therefore, confederates were used to reduce such variation as recommended by Sacco et al. (1985). 

Or hallucinatory experiences other than thinking he or she hears the voice of, or transiently sees the image of, the deceased person. 

Most people with multiple personality disorder are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40. By that time they have been seeking help for their problems for an average of seven years and have usually been hospitalized several times. In some cases this happens because in addition to having multiple personality disorder, those who suffer from it are often anxious or depressed. In other cases, the rapid mood swings that occur when personalities switch can appear to be symptoms of bipolar illness, more commonly called manic depression. Finally, the voices of the personalities a person with MPD may report hearing are interpreted as the auditory hallucinations of schizophrenia.
