Before this treatment, the cassiterite content of the ore is increased by removing impurities such as clay, by washing and by roasting which drives off oxides of arsenic and sulphur. The crude tin obtained is often contaminated with iron and other metals. It is, therefore, remelted on an inclined hearth the easily fusible tin melts away, leaving behind the less fusible impurities. The molten tin is finally stirred to bring it into intimate contact with air. The UK Environment Agency deals with over 6000 oil pollution incidents each year. One estimate suggests tliat tlie cheiTtical industry contributes to 50% of all ah pollution witli proportions approximating to sulphur dioxide (36%), carbon dioxide (28%), nitrogen oxides (18%), carbon monoxide (14%) and black smoke (10%). Motor spirit refining is responsible for ca 26% of emissions of volatile organic compounds to the atmosphere. In 1996 there were over 20 000 reports of water pollution incidents with 155 successful prosecutions. [Pg.3]

Corrosion by sulphur additives Sulphur compounds occur naturally in most lubricants and many oil additives contain sulphur. In a properly formulated lubricant these sulphur compounds should be inactive at ambient temperature. At elevated temperatures they may decompose to give more active materials which can stain and corrode metals, particularly silver and copper. However, these same sulphur compounds have many beneficial qualities this is why they are not removed com.pletely in refining and why they are used as additives. [Pg.451]

Sulphurous acid occurs in bisulphite manufacture, as well as in various processes such as cellulose pulp digestion and oil refining. Since some oxidation to sulphuric acid, which makes the conditions much more corrosive, is often involved, the use of molybdenum-bearing types is generally preferred. [Pg.559]

Industrial gas turbines generally operate at lower temperatures than aircraft jet engines but may be more susceptible to hot corrosion because they may use less-refined fuels, even crude or residual oils containing relatively high proportions of sulphur or vanadium. Platinum is used as a catalyst for nitric and sulphuric acid production, in petroleum refining and in catalytic mufflers to control air pollution. Platinum salts can cause respiratory complaints, asthma, and platinosis , an allergic response. Allergic dermatitis may also result from exposure to soluble platinum salts and once subjects have been sensitized it generally precludes continued occupational exposure at any level. The 8 hr TWA OEL for platinum metal is 5 mg/m but for soluble platinum salts it is only 0.002 mg/m. Handling precautions must include containment where possible, ventilation, personal protection, and the screening out of individuals who have become sensitized. [Pg.151]

The oil companies supplying the rubber industry claim that there is no effect on ageing properties when sulphur is present in an oil (up to 6% is possible). They claim that the refining removes the active mercaptans and sulphides and the remainder of the sulphur is complexed into polycyclic compounds and there is no evidence that this type of sulphur has any effect on cure. This claim may be true in some circumstances. However, it is known from practical experience that with certain polymers and compounds the claim is incorrect, especially when the high sulphur oils are used as test media. Oils supplied to the same oil specification from oil fields in different parts of the world, and meeting all the requirements of the specification may, because of widely different sulphur levels, have serious effects on high temperature ageing. [Pg.154]

Preparation. Sulphides are readily converted to oxide by roasting in air, that remove all sulphur as S02 this pre-treatment is followed by pyrometallurgical process by heating with carbon, or electrolytic process to obtain zinc. It is also possible by controlled oxidation to convert ZnS to the water soluble ZnS04, which can be extracted and electrolyzed to produce zinc. Crude zinc obtained by pyrometallurgical process can be refined by distillation taking into account the comparatively low boiling temperature of zinc. [Pg.468]
