Motor spirits

The UK Environment Agency deals with over 6000 oil pollution incidents each year. One estimate suggests tliat tlie cheiTtical industry contributes to 50% of all ah pollution witli proportions approximating to sulphur dioxide (36%), carbon dioxide (28%), nitrogen oxides (18%), carbon monoxide (14%) and black smoke (10%). Motor spirit refining is responsible for ca 26% of emissions of volatile organic compounds to the atmosphere. In 1996 there were over 20 000 reports of water pollution incidents with 155 successful prosecutions. [Pg.3]

Nitrogen, sulfur, oxygen (NSO) compounds These organic non-hydrocarbon compounds are found in crude oils and in various refined products. The sulfur heteroatom compounds such as thiophene and dibenzothiophene are found in motor spirits and diesel fuels. Other compounds such as pyrrole (nitrogen) and benzofuran (oxygen) are also prevalent in crude oils and its products. [Pg.135]

MOTOR SPIRIT (8006-61-9) Forms explosive mixture with air [flash point (73 octane) -45°F/-43°C (100 octane) -36°F/-38°C]. Violent reaction with oxidizers, fluorine. Incompatible with nitric acid. Flow or agitation of substance may generate electrostatic charges due to low conductivity. [Pg.830]

Of the two metals it is only sodium that is used to any extent in its metallic state. It is required in manufacturing sodium peroxide, cyanide and sodamide. An alloy with potassium is liquid at the ordinary temperature and is used in thermometry. Sodium is a useful reagent in organic chemistry as in the manufacture of synthetic rubber it was at one time used in manufactujing metallic aluminium and magnesium by replacement in the chlorides but these metals are now obtained electrolytically. An alloy with lead finds application in the manufacture of ethyl , that is, lead tetraethyl, for anti-knock motor spirit. Its property of emitting electrons when exposed to light enables it to be used in photoelectric cells. [Pg.145]

In the Hall process which is used to make motor-spirit, another procedure is used. Heavy oils are passed through tubes at 540° to 600° under a pressure of 70 pounds. The vapors produced are allowed to expand in a chamber in which the carbon formed is deposited they are then cooled to such a temperature that the heavier hydrocarbons condense. The latter are passed through the process a second time. The vapors of the more volatile compounds are next compressed to 100 to 125 pounds pressure. Under these conditions an exothermic reaction takes place which probably... [Pg.44]

Term used in the UK for a light hydrocarbon liquid fuel for spark-ignition internal combustion engines. Other terms for such fuel are gas(oline) and motor spirit. [Pg.333]

In the case of Union Spirit, still sold today, still containing over 50% fermentation ethanol, it has been carried on by an ordinary trading company, in competition with the other available motor spirits, without any other motive than that of making profits for the shareholders. [Pg.317]

Applications of adsorption from solution Include the clarification of sugar liquors by charcoal, removal of Impurities from petroleum oils and motor spirits by colloidal silica and recovery of dyes from dilute solutions in a number of solvents. [Pg.173]
