Abstract To improve the corrosion resistance of magnesium (Mg) alloys, surface modification is applied in an attempt to produce a corrosion resistant barrier. In this chapter, a new method to deposit aluminum (Al) film on an Mg alloy surface is demonstrated. Electrodeposition of Al on AZ91D Mg alloy, using an acidic aluminum chloride-l-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ionic liquid (AICI3-EMIC), has been shown to be feasible. The existence of Al coating can cause a substantial increase in corrosion resistance, reducing the susceptibility of Mg alloy to aqueous corrosion. [Pg.519]

Rea.ctivity ofLea.d—Ca.lcium Alloys. Precise control of the calcium content is required to control the grain stmcture, corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties of lead—calcium alloys. Calcium reacts readily with air and other elements such as antimony, arsenic, and sulfur to produce oxides or intermetaUic compounds (see Calciumand calciumalloys). In these reactions, calcium is lost and suspended soHds reduce fluidity and castibiUty. Steam treatment imparts increased corrosion resistance for ferrous P/M parts. The parts are heated to 400—600°C and then exposed to superheated steam. After cooling, the parts are usually oil dipped to further increase corrosion and wear resistance, and to enhance appearance (see Corrosion and CORROSION control). Heat treated parts are seldom steam treated because annealing reduces hardness and tensile strength. [Pg.187]

Addition of niobium to austenitic stainless steels inhibits intergranular corrosion by forming niobium carbide with the carbon that is present in the steel. Without the niobium addition, chromium precipitates as a chromium carbide film at the grain boundaries and thus depletes the adjacent areas of chromium and reduces the corrosion resistance. An amount of niobium equal to 10 times the carbon content is necessary to prevent precipitation of the chromium carbide. [Pg.26]

Niobium is also important in nonferrous metallurgy. Addition of niobium to tirconium reduces the corrosion resistance somewhat but increases the mechanical strength. Because niobium has a low thermal-neutron cross section, it can be alloyed with tirconium for use in the cladding of nuclear fuel rods. A Zr—l%Nb [11107-78-1] alloy has been used as primary cladding in the countries of the former USSR and in Canada. A Zr—2.5 wt % Nb alloy has been used to replace Zircaloy-2 as the cladding in Candu-PHW (pressurized hot water) reactors and has resulted in a 20% reduction in wall thickness of cladding (63) (see Nuclear reactors). [Pg.26]

Carbon, Carbides, and Nitrides. Carbon (graphite) is a good thermal and electrical conductor. It is not easily wetted by chemical action, which is an important consideration for corrosion resistance. As an important stmctural material at high temperature, pyrolytic graphite has shown a strength of 280 MPa (40,600 psi). It tends to oxidize at high temperatures, but can be used up to 2760°C for short periods in neutral or reducing conditions. The titanium oxide film consists of mtile or anatase (31) and is typically 250-A thick. It is insoluble, repairable, and nonporous in many chemical media and provides excellent corrosion resistance. The oxide is fully stable in aqueous environments over a range of pH, from highly oxidizing to mildly reducing. However, when this oxide film is broken, the corrosion rate is very rapid. Usually the presence of a small amount of water is sufficient to repair the damaged oxide film. In a seawater solution, this film is maintained in the passive region from ca 0.2 to 10 V versus the saturated calomel electrode (32,33). [Pg.102]
