In the structure of ylides, the ability of sulfur to stabilise an adjacent negative charge is an interesting phenomenon which probably involves the delocalisation of electron density into the low-lying 3d-orbitals of sulfur. Essentially, the question revolves around the relative importance of the resonance forms (2a) and (2b) (Scheme 1) in the ground state structure of sulfur ylides. The evidence tends to indicate that sulfur ylides do not contain appreciable double-bond character, so that the structure (2a) is probably the major resonance contributor, which would be in agreement with the preferred geometry of carbon and sulfur.1... [Pg.188]

This is an exothermic, reversible, homogeneous reaction taking place in a single liquid phase. The liquid butadiene feed contains 0.5 percent normal butane as an impurity. The sulfur dioxide is essentially pure. The mole ratio of sulfur dioxide to butadiene must be kept above 1 to prevent unwanted polymerization reactions. A value of 1.2 is assumed. The temperature in the process must be kept above 65°C to prevent crystallization of the butadiene sulfone but below lOO C to prevent its decomposition. The potential advantages of LPG concern essentially the environmental aspects. LPG s are simple mixtures of 3- and 4-carbon-atom hydrocarbons with few contaminants (very low sulfur content). LPG s contain no noxious additives such as lead and their exhaust emissions have little or no toxicity because aromatics are absent. This type of fuel also benefits often enough from a lower taxation. In spite of that, the use of LPG motor fuel remains static in France, if not on a slightly downward trend. Essentially all the ammonium sulfate fertilizer used in the United States is by-product material. By-product from the acid scmbbing of coke oven gas is one source. A larger source is as by-product ammonium sulfate solution from the production of caprolactam (qv) and acrylonitrile, (qv) which are synthetic fiber intermediates. A third but lesser source is from the ammoniation of spent sulfuric acid from other processes. In the recovery of by-product crystals from each of these sources, the crystallization usually is carried out in steam-heated sa turator—crystallizers. Characteristically, crystallizer product is of a particle size about 90% finer than 16 mesh (ca 1 mm dia), which is too small for satisfactory dry blending with granular fertilizer materials. Crystals of this size are suitable, however, as a feed material to mixed fertilizer granulation plants, and this is the main fertilizer outlet for by-product ammonium sulfate. [Pg.221]

Operating conditions must be controlled because a mixture of the lower fluorides such as disulfur difluoride [13709-35-8] 2 2 disulfur decafluoride [5714-22-7] 2 10 sulfur tetrafluoride [7783-60-0] SF4, may also be formed. When this reaction is carried out between 310 and 340°C, SF is primarily obtained and essentially no SF and only trace amounts of lower fluorides. The differences in the amino acid chemistry of the hide coUagen and the hair keratin are the basis of the lime-sulfide unhairing system. Hair contains the amino acid cystine. This sulfur-containing amino acid cross-links the polypeptide chains of mature hair proteins. In modem production of bovine leathers the quantity of sulfide, as Na2S or NaSH, is normally 2—4% based on the weight of the hides. The lime is essentially an unhmited supply of alkah buffered to pH 12—12.5. The sulfide breaks the polypeptide S—S cross-links by reduction. Unhairing without sulfide may take several days or weeks. The keratin can be easily hydrolyzed once there is a breakdown in the hair fiber stmcture and the hair can be removed mechanically. The coUagen hydrolysis is not affected by the presence of the sulfides (1—4,7). [Pg.83]

Other early match-like devices were based on the property of various combustible substances mixed with potassium chlorate to ignite when moistened with strong acid. More important was the property of chlorates to form mixtures with combustibles of low ignition point which were ignited by friction (John Walker, 1827). For the process step involving handling of spent sulfuric acid, several patents have been issued in which improvements in this step were a main claim. The azeotropic nitration of benzene essentially eliminates the need to reconcentrate sulfuric acid (10,11). The nitration step is carried out at higher than usual temperatures (120—160°C). Because excess benzene is used, the higher temperature allows water to be removed as a water—benzene azeotrope. The water is separated and the benzene phase, containing approximately 8% nitrobenzene, is recycled back into the reactor. The dry sulfuric acid is then reused continuously. [Pg.65]
