Stool Coating

Lubricant laxatives work by coating the stool, which allows it to be expelled more easily. The oily film covering the stool also keeps the stool from losing its water to intestinal reabsorption processes. Mineral oil (liquid petrolatum) is a non-prescription heavy oil that should be used with caution, if at all, since it may be aspirated into the lungs and cause lipoid pneumonia. This is of particular concern in the young or the elderly. 

The ability to coat paramagnetic beads with antibodies to surface antigens of bacteria has been exploited to separate and concentrate organisms from the sample. The bacteria can then be lysed, and the DNA released into the supernatant can be amplified by PCR. Such an approach has found a wide range of applications, among which is the detection of Helicobacter pylori in water and stool specimens (El). 

This formula is able to vigorously purge heat accumulation and promote bowel movement. It is used in a condition of severe obstruction of feces, Qi, blood and fire-toxin in the abdomen. The manifestations are severe constipation, distension, pain and fullness of the abdomen, which are increased by pressure. This formula can warm the Yang, strengthen the Spleen, move the Qi and drain the water. It treats severe accumulation of water in the body due to Spleen-Yang and Kidney-Yang deficiency. The manifestations are severe edema, particularly of the abdomen and legs, cold hands and feet, no thirst, fullness and distension of the chest and abdomen, soft stool, a thick and sticky tongue coating and a deep and slow pulse. 

Acute oral exposure results in abdominal cramping, diarrhea, black stools, and a greenish-black coating on the tongue. Skin exposure may result in dermatitis, allergic skin lesions, and a green discoloration of the skin. A fatal dose may result in central nervous system depression with tremors, headache, and tinnitus. 

In the stool test, specific H. pylori antigens are detected in microtiter plates coated with polyclonal antibodies. Debate continues regarding its accuracy for assessing treatment outcome some of the variability in results between different studies appears to be caused by lack of standardization of the interval between completion of eradication therapy and stool testing.However, the test is currently recommended for posteradication testing if the urea breath test is not available. 

Many types of bismuth mineral salts (e.g., bismuth subsalicylate) are generally multipurpose intestinal medicinal agents. As an antisecretory agent, bismuth subsalicylate coats and protects irritated and inflamed intestinal lumen tissue (antiulcer actions), decreases the secretion of fluid into the intestine, absorbs or neutralizes bacterial toxins, inhibits any bacterial activity (antidiarrhea actions), and also increases alkaline secretion to counteract any acid production (antacid action). Thus, this agent controls the frequent voluminous loss of watery stools while relieving intestinal cramping and irritation.

For early cirrhosis of the liver with abdominal distention, bleeding gums, yellow urine, constipation, a red tongue with thin, yellow coating, and a wiry, thready, rapid pulse, add Radix Polygoni Multiflori (He Shou Wu), Herba Ecliptae Prostratae (Han Lian Cao), Carapax Amydae (Bie Jia), Concha Ostreae (Mu Li), and Fructus Meliae Toosendan (Chuan Lian Zi). If there is also edema and loose stools, add Rhizoma Atractylodis...

Rats fed 10 g/kg bitter orange fruit concentrated extract daily for 14 days showed no mortality, although clinical abnormalities were observed, including rough coat, decreased activity, congested breathing, dark material around the facial area, decreased defecation, salivation, soft stools and urine/fecal stain (Douds 1997).
