Bloody stool

Clinical signs of bleeding include bloody stools, melena, hematuria, hematemesis, bruising, and oozing from arterial or venous puncture sites. 

Patients with acute infectious diarrhea from invasive organisms also have bloody stools and severe abdominal pain. 

Hydration and electrolyte balance, often with ORT, are the cornerstone of treatment. The specific circumstances that antibiotics should be considered include high fevers, bloody stools, symptoms longer than 1 week, pregnancy, infection with HIV, and other immunocompromised hosts.

SYSTEMIC EFFECTS Occurs primarily through inhalation and ingestion. The T vapor or aerosol is less toxic to the skin or eyes than the liquid form. When inhaled, the upper respiratory tract (nose, throat, tracheae) is inflamed after a few hours latency period, accompanied by sneezing, coughing and bronchitis, loss of appetite, diarrhea, fever, and apathy. Exposure to nearly lethal doses of T can produce injury to bone marrow, lymph nodes, and spleen as indicated by a drop in white blood cell (WBC) count and, therefore, results in increased susceptibility to local and systemic infections. Ingestion of T will produce severe stomach pains, vomiting, and bloody stools after a 15-20 minute latency period. 

Vibrio spp. contaminate water (especially salt water due to the halophilic properties of bacteria), seafood, mollusks, crustaceans, and undercooked vegetables. In Asia, infections frequently accompany floods and other natural disasters. In the Far East and in Japan, V. parahaemolyticus infections are endemic. The causative factor is achlorhydria (often iatrogenic). The onset of Vibrio infection acquired via the orofecal pathway resembles dysentery due to frequent bloody stools (Butterton and Claderwood, 2001).

Dysentery The general term for severe gastrointestinal distress (diarrhea, cramps, bloody stools) that is usually associated with the presence of infectious microorganisms in the intestines. 

A 38-year-old man presented with a 2-day history of severe abdominal pain and bloody stools after smoking cocaine 48 hours earlier (198). He had abdominal pain, guarding, rebound tenderness, and high-pitched, hypoactive bowel sounds. His white blood cell count was 31 x 109/1. Radiography showed thumb-printing in the transverse colon. Endoscopy showed friable edematous mucosa with submucosal hemorrhage and patches of yellowish fibrinous material. He recovered fully with intravenous nutrition and supportive measures after 30 days. 

In severely ill, elderly, pregnant, or immunocompromised patients, and those with bloody stools, high fever, extraintestinal infection, worsening or relapsing symptoms, or symptoms lasting longer than 1 week... 

Measles should be suspected in areas where it is endemic and childhood immunization rates are low signs of measles include fever, cough, mouth sores, and rash (Greenough, 2002). Children under 5 years of age who pass rice water stools with or without vomiting should raise the suspicion of cholera in epidemic areas (Greenough, 2002). Shigella is suspected in children with painful bloody stools and fever (Greenough, 2002). 

Symptoms for most lymphomas are similar. Many patients experience enlargement of the liver and spleen as well as the lymph nodes. Some patients have bloody stools or vomit blood. Tiredness, itching, weight loss, fever, and general immunosuppression may also be present. The symptoms may abate and intensify over several months before a diagnosis is made. Signs and symptoms of toxicity in animals and livestock would be similar to those in humans. Livestock symptoms include diarrhea, bloody stools, anorexia, weakness, urge to urinate, and dysrhythmias. Treatment should consist of symptomatic and supportive care. 

Gastrointestinal Effects. Few studies regarding gastrointestinal effects after inhalation exposure were located. In humans, Kilburn (1994) describes vague gastrointestinal effects in four patients who had been occupationally exposed to formaldehyde for 14-30 years. Three of the patients were anatomists and were exposed to formalin the fourth was a railroad worker who worked next to a wood-products factory that used large quantities of phenol-formaldehyde resins. Intestinal cramps with flatus and bloody stools was one of many nonspecific effects noted in this small population.
