Bismuth subsalicylate

Bismuth Subsalicylate. (2-Hydroxybenzoato-0 )-oxobismuth [14882-18-9] (Pepto-Bismol) maybe made by the process described in Reference 10. Bismuth subsaHcylate has been shown to bind toxins produced by several bacterial strains. It may also act as a result of its saHcylate component on prostaglandin formation and have specific intestinal antisecretory activity. It has been found to be effective in the prevention and therapy of... [Pg.202]

WEB The active ingredient in Pepto-Bismol (an over-the-counter remedy for upset stomach) is bismuth subsalicylate, C7H5Bi04. Analysis of a 1.500-g sample of Pepto-Bismol yields 346 mg of bismuth. What percent by mass is bismuth subsalicylate (Assume that there is no other bismuth-containing compound in Pepto-Bismol.)... [Pg.69]

Bismuth subsalicylate—Immediately report any symptoms of salicylate toxicity (ringing in the ears, rapid respirations). Chew tablets thoroughly or dissolve them in the mouth. Do not swallow tablets whole Stools may become dark. This is normal and will disappear when tiie drug therapy is discontinued. Do not take this drug with aspirin or aspirin products. [Pg.484]

A study was made of the comparative stabilities at various exposures of an upset stomach remedy suspension. This product consisted of a dispersion of bismuth subsalicylate and phenylsalicylate in an aqueous system. Methyl-cellulose and magnesium aluminum silicate were selected as the suspending agents, because the presence of polyvalent metallic ions precluded the use of hydrocolloids affected by these ions. In addition, it was found that methyl-cellulose contributed a demulcent effect. The viscosity, as well as the suspension characteristics of the combination of protective colloids used, was of a synergistic nature. These colloids formed a thixotropic system. The thixotropy undoubtedly aids in stabilizing this system. In order to make this product palatable and impart elegance, color and flavor were added. Sample 1 (with protective colloids) showed no separation, while sample 2 (without... [Pg.87]

The answer is e. (Hardmanr p 926.) Diphenoxylate is a piperidine opioid that is related to meperidine, it inhibits peristalsis and, hence, increases the passage time of the intestinal bolus. Lt is combined with atropine to discourage use as a street drug. Atropine has little effect on peristalsis. Clonidine, bismuth subsalicylate, and re hydration therapy are all useful in some types of diarrhea, but none of them inhibit peristalsis. [Pg.232]

The answer is d. (Hardman, pp 909-910.) It is now recognized that infection with fi pylon is a major etiologic factor in peptic ulcer disease. Bismuth salts are bactericidal for many organisms but especially for spirochetes. Colloidal bismuth salts such as bismuth subsalicylate also have a coating or cytoprotective action. Antimicrobials and GI antisecretory drugs are also used in combination with bismuth compounds. [Pg.233]

Bismuth subsalicylate is often used for treatment or prevention of diarrhea (traveler s diarrhea) and has antisecretory, antiinflammatory, and antibacterial effects. Bismuth subsalicylate contains multiple components that might be toxic if given in excess to prevent or treat diarrhea. [Pg.271]
