Steel mill sheet

The process flow sheet was first tested for direct leaching of steel mill flue dust and production of zinc metal by electrowinning. The tests were performed in a continuously operating pilot plant, producing 10-20 kg/day zinc metal. The same pilot plant was then used for treating copper/zinc-rich brass mill flue dust in a closed loop operation, recycling all the zinc solvent extraction raffinate to the copper circuit leach section. In the zinc circuit leach section, only the amount of zinc rich dust necessary for neutralization of the copper solvent extraction raffinate was used. The results obtained from the pilot plant tests indicated contamination problems within the solvent extraction loops. The estimation of economic data showed a weak return on the assets compared with the alkali route, and sensitivity toward the raw material price. [Pg.620]

The calendering process and its conditions are developed or modified according to the requirements of subsequent operations and the purpose for which the sheet is used. Thus for sheets which are to be open cured, such as in chemical plant lining and custom built items such as inflatables and ebonite pipes, roll coverings for paper and steel mills, the calendering needs to be more exact than the sheets which are used for blank preparation for molding of... [Pg.223]

As an internal insulation in a process vessel, reducing the surface temperatures on the membrane to an acceptable level. Examples (1) Steel pickling tank in a steel mill, lined with rubber sheet. Top service temperature of the rubber 160°F, but bath temperature 210°F. The brick lining provides sufficient insulation to get the surface temperature of the rubber sheet down to 140°F. (2) The same system to protect the membrane in process vessels or (3) to prevent live steam from cutting out the asphalt membrane on a floor. [Pg.232]

Three primary installations in an integrated steel plant are the blast furnace, the steel furnaces, and the rolling mills. The blast furnace converts iron ore to pig iron the steel furnaces convert the pig iron to steel and the rolling mills shape the steel into sheets, slabs, or bars. [Pg.1187]

Properties. The properties of plain carbon steels are governed principally by carbon content and microstmcture. These properties can be controlled by heat treatment as discussed. About half the plain carbon steels are used in the hot-roUed form, although increasingly the property combinations are enhanced by controlled cooling following the last stand of the hot mill for stmctural shapes, sheet, and strip. The other half are cold-roUed to thin sheet or strip and used direcdy or with an annealing treatment such as described. [Pg.394]

For conventional wet processing of sheet steel, the porcelain enamel frit is ball-milled using clay, certain electrolytes, and water to form a stable suspension. This clay-supported slurry of small particles is called the sHp and has the consistency of a heavy cream. The ingredients of the mill batch are carefully controlled. The amount and purity of all materials in the mill, including the clay and water, affect the rheological character of the sHp as well as a number of the properties of the fined enamel such as chemical resistance, reflectance, gloss, color, and abrasion resistance. [Pg.209]

Steel that has been hot-rolled and pickled may be cold-rolled immediately at ambient temperatures before further oxidation can occur. This is done to impart the desired mechanical and surface properties in the steel, and for cold working of the pipe and tube. The two main types of cold mill products are cold-rolled sheets/coils for sale or for further processing in galvanizing and coatings lines, and cold-rolled coils for subsequent tinning.1... [Pg.60]

Stainless steel coil and sheet stock is unloaded and stored outdoors under protective cover. As it is needed, the coil stock is moved indoors by a forklift to one of six automatic tube mills where the sides of unrolled metal strips are curled up to form a continuous, cylindrical pipe. The seam of the resulting pipe is fused in an electric in-line welding operation. An abrasive saw is used to cut the continuously formed pipe to specified lengths sections of poorly welded pipe are cut away. [Pg.1205]

Test samples have been prepared from a 3 mm hot-rolled steel sheet which showed an intact mill scale (Degree A of Swedish Standards, SIS-055900), Thereafter they were shot blasted with S-280 to reach the ASa3 standard, prior to the application of the paint coating. Surface preparation B St 2 was obtained by wire brushing a steel sheet of Grade B obtained in turn by oxidation of Grade A sheet in a contaminant free atmosphere. In "Table I.", the characteristics of the paints used in this study are shown. [Pg.88]
