Starting the project

So we start the project with the preparation of a master plan that is verified to meet the project requirements, and is preferably formally approved by the client. If the client s exact requirements are already set out in a contract, as for a turnkey plant, the plan should be checked against the contract specification.

A company may be considering a project with a very high potential rate of return and a low risk, but it may prove impossible to raise the money to start the project. Conversely, the company may be prepared to undertake an extremely risky project if the investment is trivial. Thus, the attitude of a company to risk depends on the circumstances. 

Research projects require careful management by the instructor. Over the years, a few strategies have been developed to more efficiently manage time and resources. Figure 16-8 shows the accumulated amount of money. This first decreases as you spend, but have no income. It then starts increasing, and in a good project it will end well above the zero line. The value at the end - after the last sales - is the value of the project or VP. With your assumptions, you get a value of k 800. An important parameter for each product is the required investment. This is the amount of money you must have available in the dip of the diagram, here k 700. You must have certainty of getting this amount before you start the project.

Prof. Taniguchi s enthusiasm as the discoverer of NKT cells matched with my desire to have our own laboratory space, and we agreed to start the project. The consolidation phase in progress since December 1997 covers the validation with Minatom of the basic options and data.
