Congress passed the Occupational and Safety Health Act to ensure worker and workplace safety. Their goal was to make sure employers provide their workers a place of employment free from recognized hazards to safety and health, such as exposure to toxic chemicals, excessive noise levels, mechanical dangers, heat or cold stress, or unsanitary conditions. In order to establish standards for workplace health and safety, the Act also created the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) as the research institution for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA is a division of the U.S. Department of Labor which oversees the administration of the Act and enforces Federal standards in all 50 states. [Pg.25]

However, the various national standards organizations, power boiler manufacturers associations and research institutes (such as the Electric Power Research Institute in the United States) do offer guidelines and recommendations for good waterside control and the avoidance (or at least the minimization) of the more exotic forms of waterside damage. [Pg.464]

The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 [10] was introduced in the beginning of the 1990s. It was developed by the Austrian Textile Research Institute (OTI) and the German Research Institute Hohenstein and is a product label based on test for harmful substances in leather (or textiles), and the primary target group is the textile and clothing industry. [Pg.255]

As a thermodynamicist working at the Lower Slobbovian Research Institute, you have been asked to determine the standard Gibbs free energy of formation and the standard enthalpy of formation of the compounds ds-butene-2 and trans-butene-2. Your boss has informed you that the standard enthalpy of formation of butene-1 is 1.172 kJ/mole while the standard Gibbs free energy of formation is 72.10 kJ/mole where the standard state is taken as the pure component at 25 °C and 101.3 kPa. [Pg.20]

Isolation Procedures Once a victim of chemical or biological agents or weapons gets to the hospital or another healthcare facility, that person may have to abide by patient isolation procedures. These include Standard Precautions, Airborne Precautions, Droplet Precautions, and Contact Precautions. These precautions are spelled out in the third edition of Medical Management Of Biological Casualties Handbook published by the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Disease located at Fort Detrick in Frederick, Maryland. [Pg.75]

Commentary Since this problem is solved by an academic research institute, they were likely to have greater access to cutting-edge analytical tools than are considered standard. Unlike a problem such as the Bulging Drum, time was not an important consideration in this problem. Re-creating the ancient cream, based on the analytical results, was important to postulating its end-use. [Pg.842]

Although the results are not yet analysed it can be concluded that the threshold values agree. Results of this study will also be incorporated in the definitive version of the chapter on odours in the Air Pollution Control Manual. The draft is currently with the printer and will be released soon (4). In coming years a ringtest will probably be organised under supervision of the Netherlands Standards institute. Eveiy research institute, provincial authority and industiy will be invited to participate in this ringtest. [Pg.83]

The surrogate compounds were mono-, tetra-, octa-, deca- C-PCBs, dg-naphthalene, C-PCP and C-phenol. The soil samples were dried with Na2S04 (60 g) and then Soxhlet extracted with hexane acetone (9 1) for 16 h. The extract was dried with sodium sulfate, concentrated, and split. While one portion was held for other analyses, the other portion was placed on a 3% deactivated silica gel column and eluted with increasing solvent polarity systems [hexane, followed by methylene chloride hexane (1 1), and then methylene chloride acetone (95 5)]. The extracts were combined and reduced to 1 mL, split and two internal standards added (tetrafluorobiphenyl and di2 Chrysene). The extracts were chromatographed on a 15-m DB-5 fused silica capillary column and detected with flame ionization (FID). Sludge samples were extracted according to the EPA sludge protocol (2) developed at Midwest Research Institute. [Pg.70]
