Some Project Results

The theory behind body-fixed representations and the associated angular momentum function expansions of the wavefunction (or wave packet) in terms of bases parameterized by the relevant constants of the motion and approximate constants of the motion is highly technical. Some pertinent results will simply be stated. The two good constants of the motion are total angular momentum, J, and parity, p = +1 or 1. An approximate constant of the motion is K, the body-fixed projection of total angular momentum on the body-fixed axis. For simplicity, we will restrict attention to the helicity-decoupled or centrifugal sudden (CS) approximation in which K can be assumed to be a constant of the motion. Abstract. This aims to be an overview of what detailed observations of individual stars in nearby dwarf galaxies may teach us about galaxy evolution. This includes some early results from the DART (Dwarf Abundances and Radial velocity Team) Large Programme at ESO. This project has used 2.2m/WFI and VLT/FLAMES to obtain spectra of large samples of individual stars in nearby dwarf spheroidal galaxies and determine accurate abundances and kinematics. These results can be used to trace the formation and evolution of nearby galaxies from the earliest times to the present. [Pg.213]

In our initial use of VIRS methods, we have chosen a diverse set of projects. These include epithermal-style precious metal mineralization (eastern and central Newfoundland), mesothermal gold mineralization (Central Newfoundland), syngenetic VMS mineralization and related alteration (Central Newfoundland), porphyry-style Mo-Cu mineralization (southern Newfoundland) and uranium mineralization in the Central Mineral Belt of Labrador. Space does not permit detailed discussion of results, but in all cases we were able to recognize distinctive alteration species and document their distribution. In some cases, results provided surprises, eg., the recognition of topaz in quartz-alunite alteration and possible Li-rich micas in VMS alteration influenced by magmatic fluids. In some cases, the resolution of species in mixed assemblages proved to be difficult, but the overall spectral patterns could still be used to discriminate alteration facies and demonstrate their superposition. [Pg.291]

The results obtained by API Research Project 6 from the exhaustive fractionation of the gasoline fraction of one representative petroleum serve to indicate what hydrocarbon compounds are in the gasoline fraction of petroleum and the amounts which may be expected to be present in a petroleum of intermediate type. In order to obtain information as to how the amounts of the hydrocarbon components vary in petroleums of appreciably different type, an investigation has been made of the hydrocarbons in the gasoline fraction of seven representative petroleums. The present status of the work of API Research Project 6 is summarized here, including the results of earlier investigations plus some unpublished results 46). [Pg.350]

Not much research was performed on coating of tubes in this project. Results on the coating of commercial tubes show however that it is rather difficult to coat sufficiently defect-free membranes on these supports. As was already stated in chapter 4, the surface roughness of the used tubes was possibly too high to coat high quality silica layers. Another possibility is that here the same problem occurs as was encountered with the sealed flat membranes. Some defects in the membrane layer might result from a bad adherence of the coated layer at the enamel/membrane interface. [Pg.101]

Some projects were easier to implement than expected, while others are still stymied by the system. As a result of some innovative refinery process engineering, the refinery was able to completely eliminate the use of the coker cooling pond (rather than just controlling its emissions), achieving twice the emissions reduction at a fraction of the original cost estimate. This is truly one of the noteworthy outcomes of the project. This is a textbook case where, faced with a costly option, the refinery experts teamed up to identify a cost-effective solution that provided the greatest possible environmental benefit—elimination of the emission source entirely. Costly emission controls were avoided. Furthermore, the reduction was accomplished with far fewer resources than originally estimated. [Pg.397]

At our institute we are currently working on a project called Analysis of pollution control countermeasures in Oslo , or the Oslo-project for short. The Oslo roject is conducted by the Norwegian State Pollution Control Authority, and the objective is to identify pollution control actions, and to rank these according to their cost-effectiveness. The study is still in an early phase, and we are therefore only able to present some preliminary results. [Pg.95]

In this chapter, we will present some contemporary results from our laboratory aimed toward blending the desirable properties of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts to create highly active, selective, and recoverable immobilized catalysts. The chapter covers organometaUic catalytic systems for polymerization reactions as well as small molecule reactions. Formation of single-site catalysts, recyclability, and stability/leaching issues will be addressed, as will studies on the effects of the immobilization procedure and the nature of the support structure on catalytic performance. Finally, a brief discussion on projected future directions for immobilized catalysts is presented. [Pg.442]

The data obtained were plotted as viscosity versus temperature for the different materials and displayed the expected exponential increase in viscosity as the temperature decreased. For most of the slags a characteristic sudden increase in viscosity was noted, as in some related studies (J 3 ). CACs were developed in response to the need for cements resistant to groundwater and seawater attack and are the only cements, other than Portland cement, that are in continuous long-term production [2], The property of CAC that was most important in their commercial development is the resistance to sulfate attack, which contrasted with the poor-sulfate resistance of contemporary Portland cements [2], and CAC was first patented in 1908 [2], Most early applications, in construction projects following the First World War, were in structures exposed to seawater, such as harbor pilings. Because CAC hardens rapidly, it was adopted for prestressed concrete beams in the post World War II construction boom, with some unfortunate results. Poor understanding of the material properties of CAC and incorrect water to cement ratios led to the collapse of several buildings, and the use of Portland cements, which are cheaper, has replaced CAC in prestressed concrete beams[2]. [Pg.52]

Since the project has only just started, no definite chemical results have yet been published. But the explanation of the program, in a paper addressed to computer scientists gives hope that the project will soon bear some encouraging results for chemistry. [Pg.125]

Accelerometers have been worn in many ways. They have been embedded in adhesive patches, belts, shirts, pants as well as in accessories such as straps, wristbands, bracelets, or balls. The integration of accelerometers in flexible wearable medical and sportswear has been explored with some interesting results. In the SensVest project, accelerometers were secured by Velcro straps connected to an adjustable vest and used in conjunction with a heart rate monitor to illustrate the correlation between activity and heart rate levels (Knight et al., 2005). Dewatering during caisson construction would lead to lowering of the groimdwater table. This may result in subsidence of the surrounding ground, services, roads or properties.
