Hoeft [44] also studied the cooperative and competitive adsorption of ionic surfactant mixtures onto hydrophobic surfaces. When shorter alkyl chain surfactants (sodium octyl sulfonate and sodium decyl sulfonate) are adsorbed, the decyl will displace the octyl surfactant. For mixtures of sodium dodecyi sulfonate and sodium octyl sulfonate, however, there appears to be an association between the surfactant molecules leading to enhanced adsorption of the sodium dodecyi sulfonate with no depletion of the octyl sulfonate adsorption. This is shown in Fig, 2, where the lines indicate the expected adsorption determined using a two-component Langmuir adsorption isotherm with the adsorption parameters determined analyzing the data from adsorption of each species individually. Also shown in Fig. 2 is the concentration of surface-active materials in the aqueous phase at equilibrium. In each of these experiments the total molar concentration and amount of surfactant solution added to the latex was a constant, as was the amount of latex. Thus a lower value for the bulk concentration corresponds to greater adsorption. [Pg.669]

Many surfactants have been used to formulate microemulsions (1). They were of three types anionic surfactants such as petroleum sulfonates, sodium octyl benzene sulfonate, sodium dodecyl sulfate, alkaline soaps cationic surfactants such as dodecyl ammonium and hexadecyl eimmonium chlorides or bromides and nonionic surfactants such as polyoxyethylene glycols. Furthermore, many exhibit liquid-crystalline properties (2) and in some cases the structure of the mesophases has been established (3). Fatty acids have a lower solubility in typical ionic detergent solutions than in bile acid solutions, for a given micellar concentration. To paraphrase, the micellar zone in the ternary phase diagram of this system (ionic detergent-fatty acid-water) is smaller than that in the system bile acid-fatty acid-water. Small has constructed the sodium oleate-oleic acid-water phase diagram (32) the micellar zone is extremely small because of the formation of liquid crystalline phases of oleic-sodium oleate at very low oleic acid/ sodium oleate ratios. In unpublished experiments carried out several years ago, we compared the solubility of lauric acid in 40 mM solutions of sodium taurodeoxycholate and sodium glycodeoxycholate with that in sodium octyl benzene sulfonate. Lauric acid at concentrations of 1, 5, and 10 mM was completely soluble in these bile acid solutions at pH 6.3. By contrast, a 5 mM concentration of lauric acid in sodium octyl benzene sulfonate solution was completely turbid. [Pg.127]
