Small Island States

Mauritius is already a victim of the adverse impact of climate change (we cannot forget the floods of 26 March 2008) and of fuel and food crises, to which it may not have contributed in any significant manner. The difficulties get further exacerbated because of our heavy dependence on imports of basic commodities and overseas markets for our goods, among others. The social responsibility angle of development has become crucial at least for the small island states. [Pg.378]

While I have characterised state-averse as an historical feature of Southeast Asia (minus Vietnam and the Irrawaddy basin), there was a wide variety of experiences with states both of the cosmic templebuilding and the trade-oriented type. At one end of the spectrum were the hill peoples in general, along with boat people or sea-gypsies of small-island clusters, and the inhabitants of some other small islands of... [Pg.45]

The coast of the State of Maine is one of the most irregular in the world. (2) It is deeply indented with many coves and harbors, and numerous small islands dot the shoreline. (3)In fact, this area is a prime example of what geologists refer to as a drowned coastline. (4)Draw a straight line from the southernmost city in Maine, Kit-tery, to the northernmost coastal city, Eastport. (5)This line would measure about 225 miles. (6)Follow the coastline between the same two cities. (7)The distance is more than ten times as far. (8)What is the cause of this irregularity (9)The ice age, or age of continental glaciation, which occurred thousands of years ago. [Pg.116]

A new funding mechanism called the Quick Start Programme was set up. Its objective is to support initial enabling capacity building and implementation activities in developing countries, least developed countries, small island developing States and countries with economies in transition. ... [Pg.200]

The situation can become critical particularly for small island developing states like Mauritius because of their inherent vulnerability the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Hon. Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam pointed out during his address to the UN Assembly s annual high-level debate on global warming held on 28 September 2007. He further informed the Assembly that the small island developing states... [Pg.378]

Fig. 4.18 STM images of a Gd(OOOl) film after total hydrogen exposures of 5 L (a), 10 L (b), and 20 L (c, d) all bars represent 20 nm. The Gd surface state is detectable as areas appearing higher on the same terrace in (a) whereas in (c) it is almost disappeared. It reappears after 40 min, as can be seen in (d) indicating the removal of hydrogen from the surface. After 20 L, two different types of surface pattern appear, e Small islands with disc-like shape 1 and ramps 2. Reprinted with permission from [19]. As stated in the Experimental section, these coatings were applied using an airbrush technique. Visual Inspection of these coatings under a microscope reveals that the films are not contiguous, but are dispersed on the surface as small islands. In this case, expansion of the films may be responsible for the gradual slope of the frequency-temperature curves. [Pg.231]

For the alkali metal clusters in the solid state, only a small island of stability exists so far, and this is with the suboxides of the heavy alkali metals Rb and Cs [4] at relatively low temperatures. Similar compounds of the lighter metals and the higher homologues of oxygen do not exist. [Pg.436]

GSL Australia s major ongoing contracts with Australian Commonwealth and State Governments include management of detention facilities throughout Australia, the maximum security prison in Victoria, low to medium security prisons in South Australia, forensic psychiatric facilities in Victoria and Tasmania, prisoner transport, court security, and electronic monitoring services in Victoria and South Australia. The companies most remote location, a small tropical island in the middle of the Indian Ocean, is a hardship post for GSL staff as workers find the remoteness of Christmas Island and unfamiliar experience of living on a small island difficult to come to terms with (GSL Global, 2008 2). [Pg.1739]
