Rainwater harvesting

A form of rainwater harvesting involves collection on the soil surface. Soil can be prepared especially for this purpose, such as by planting grass varieties that produce a dense sod from which rainwater tends to wash off. Large parking lots and other paved areas are potential sources of rainwater runoff that can be harvested. [Pg.149]

Although it is generally not advised as a source of drinking water for humans, harvested rainwater can be used for irrigation, for domestic applications other than drinking or cooking, for livestock, in car wash facilities, and in other applications where potable water is not required. [Pg.149]

During municipal water treatment, air is often mixed intimately with the water, that is, it is aerated. What kinds of undesirable contaminants would this procedure remove from water  [Pg.149]

Phosphate in the form of H2P04 and HPO/ ions is the substance usually removed from secondary sewage effluent to prevent excessive algal growth and eutrophication in receiving waters. Of several possible algal nutrients, why is phosphate chosen Show with a chemical reaction the most common means of removal. [Pg.149]

Membrane filtration processes can be very effective in removing residual BOD from secondary wastewater effluent. What does this suggest regarding the nature of contaminants responsible for the BOD  [Pg.149]

With the move towards more sustainable homes UK architects are becoming more likely to specify rainwater harvesting in their design to support alternatives to a mains water supply. In Germany, rainwater harvesting systems are now installed as standard in all new commercial buildings. [Pg.179]

Rainwater harvesting is the collection and storage of rainwater for future use. [Pg.179]

Rainwater harvesting. At a time when many homes are connected to water meters, it makes good economical sense to try to preserve this scarce natural resource. All that is required is a large storage vessel to collect all the rainwater which falls on the roof and flat paved areas around the property. [Pg.92]

Rainwater harvesting. At a time when many people are on water meters these water-saving techniques make a lot of sense. The disadvantage is that you must find a place to put the large water storage vessel. [Pg.94]
