Professional lives

As Flemings points out, compared with the middle of the twentieth century, MSE departments now have to prepare their students for quite different professional lives. The key question that seems to arise from these figures is Do university departments put too much emphasis on research And yet, before we conclude that they do, we must remember that it is widely agreed that research is what keeps university faculty alert and able to teach in an up-to-date way. It may well be that what students currently want, and what the health and progress of MSE demands, are two distinct things. 

FRESHMAN CHEMISTRY is arguably an important course, one that needs to be viewed as a contribution beyond a service level. It affords the opportunity to make the case, to many students of varied disciplines, of why chemistry is the central science and is responsible for virtually all of the high-tech developments they encounter or read about. The course should be a vehicle to attract more students to chemistry. More importantly, it should instill greater respect for and appreciation of chemistry by students who will not necessarily specialize in it. In our view, this function is particularly important for engineering students, as they will frequently use the basic ideas in freshman chemistry in their professional lives, yet they often wonder where the connection is while they are exposed to these ideas in the classroom. 

Even in the eighteenth century, individuals were not expected to possess all the knowledge necessary for professional life, but were expected to have the skills required to find what was needed. The ability to find what is needed is an essential survival skill in today s world. Interestingly, today information management survival skills are essential to all individuals—in both our personal and our professional lives. Lyman et al. 

It s odd that so many thoughtful people dislike writing. After aU, it is one of the few school activities that follow us from grade to grade and class to class, from the first year of elementary school to the senior year in college. How is it that such an important activity, one we have practiced and practiced, becomes so frequently blocked during our professional lives and is therefore so often dreaded or avoided ... 

The goal of this chapter was to raise awareness about the importance of time management in one s personal and professional lives. Readers should have come away with concrete strategies about how to improve thier skills so that they can achieve their full potential. Remember, time management is not about managing time, it s about managing yourself - and all of us can proabably use at least some improvement so that we can be more effective in all that we do. 

This was followed with a computer science activity where the students learned how impersonators can use the SMTP protocol on telnet sessions to send fraudulent e-mail messages.7 They also used e-mail headers to determine the origin of the e-mail8 and steganography software called S-Tools to test for and to reveal a hidden image embedded in a picture found as an e-mail attachment (Kessler 2004). This activity emphasized the use and abuse of communication technology, both in their personal and professional lives. 

Values matter. In our personal lives—our relationships with family and friends, and in our choice of work and recreation—I believe in individual liberty. People should not accept emotional or physical bullying or coercion in their personal or professional lives. In the political realm, the problem of individual freedom obviously becomes more complicated, but in our personal lives, it can be straightforward. In our personal lives, we should respect each other s freedom. As therapists, we respect the freedom of our patients, and we encourage them to respect the freedom of others (see my discussions of liberty, love, and oppression from an individual and societal perspective in Breggin 1988, 1988-1989, and 1992a). 

Mr. Wellington E. Walker died suddenly on May 8, 1980. His death is a deep loss to his friends at Union Carbide Corporation. It has been little more than ten years since the first international meeting [1] bringing together molecular biologists and biochemists whose professional lives had been transformed by the discovery of the archaea. Many of the results of the last decade of intensive research are summarized in the chapters of this volume. Communication pervades virtually every facet of our personal and professional lives. In today s world, technical expertise is not enough you also need the ability to communicate effectively. The good communicator has skills that form the core of all communication competencies, knows how to adapt to different communication situations, and moves comfortably from formal writing to e-mail to one-to-one communication to group discussion to public speaking. 

Irwin Wynne (1996) have demonstrated that the public will engage seriously with complex scientific issues when their lives are deeply affected. Often, this process is painful and difficult. Effective promotion of chemistry should not wait for such desperate times. Those of us who have pursued this discipline in our professional lives understand its appeal. We should not find it so difficult to share our enthusiasm for chemistry with the rest of the community. We must be ambitious in setting out our aims for informal chemical education. 

This means, in the end, educating engineers who can learn to learn and who are ready to do so all along their professional lives. Twenty-first engineers will be, effectively, illiterate and noncompetitive if they have not learned to learn. ...
