Skills in demand

Job insecurity also exists at small companies. At a small pharmaceutical or biotechnology company that is still working to develop its first product, having adequate cash on hand to meet periodic expenses (cash flow) can be a serious problem. The jobs of computational chemists at such company can be in jeopardy if available cash must be devoted to meet current expenses instead of being used for a long-term project such as drug discovery. [Pg.303]

The most general term computational chemistry appears in the greatest number of advertisements. However, this term (or computational chemist) is not used in all advertisements. In fact, these terms appear in only about 40% of them. [Pg.306]

Quantum chemistry, a traditional core area of computational chemistry, was requested in fewer than ten of the C EN advertisements. Perhaps not surprisingly, most of the jobs requiring an interest in theoretical chemistry or quantum mechanics were in academia. Likewise molecular simulations, another favorite and important field in academia, is not a skill in exceptionally high demand in industry. [Pg.308]

There is no point in highlighting skills you know the employer has little or no interest in. So, by evaluating help-wanted ads, you can pinpoint the skills in demand and that will make you more marketable. It s these skills that should be highlighted within your resume. [Pg.167]

Maintenance may be handled either by employees hired especially for that job or by an outside contractor. The latter is most economical when workers in most trades are needed only occasionally. The company does not need to hire these workers full time, but still has their talents available when they are needed. Even in a large plant where a number of employees skilled in each maintenance trade are needed full time, contract maintenance may be used as a supplement at times of turnarounds (a planned time when large continuous plants are shut down to do preventive maintenance, repairs, and inspections) or especially heavy demands. For instance, during the turnaround of a 140,000 bbl/day (22,000 m3/day) Tidewater Oil Company refinery, the number of maintenance personnel rose from a preshutdown level of 181 to 924 men.48 Fewer men could have been used, but the downtime of the refinery would have been increased. In this instance the plant contracted for all of its maintenance. [Pg.211]

Today, field-based water treatment services need to provide the customer with an increasing depth and rapidity of authoritative information and support. The service demanded is a high-quality mix of applied chemistry, business management, and hands-on technical skills. In addition, practical advice, fully communicated to the customer, both up and down the line is required. [Pg.552]

Some people decide it is best for them to ease into retirement by having a part-time job. Those who possess skills that are in demand find it profitable and comfortable to work as consultants, freelancers, or temporaries. Many who follow this route like the arrangement so well they stay with it for years—long beyond the normal retirement age of 65. Others stay with the plan until they find even part-time work so demanding they give it up. Still others move into full retirement when they discover they no longer need the additional income or the contacts that work provides. [Pg.27]

From a practical point of view, the attainment of the specified dry film thickness is important. In many cases, a minimum thickness must be achieved or protection will fail in a short period. This aspect demands skill in application and close inspection and control. For metallic zinc paints, the thickness would normally be of the order of 60-100/im, for anticorrosive pigmented paints, together with top coats, 100-200 //m, and for inert barrier types 150-300/im. For special environments or projects, these thicknesses may be varied but it should not be presumed that protection will always be improved or be more effective over a longer period of time by increasing the film thickness. [Pg.271]

The current increase in the need for public health services comes at a time when the national public health infrastructure has been weakened by years of financial neglect. While the public health workforce has always provided for community disasters, the level of preparedness called for by the terrorist attacks on 9/11 necessitates training on a new and different level. The times in which we now live make it imperative that public health nursing keep pace with the demand for skills in the disaster and emergency response arenas. [Pg.591]

Abstract The laboratory courses in chemistry at tertiary level are expected to (i) expose students to experimental techniques and skills, (ii) allow sufficient practice to master these techniques and (iii) also provide opportunities to students as investigators of the experimental work. The present paper discusses and analyses the laboratory courses in organic chemistry, prescribed by Mumbai University, one of the oldest Universities of India for (i) the content, (ii) skills/technical demands of the experiments, (iii) weightage with respect to time and marks, (iv) evaluation criteria used for assessment of students, and (v) the changes it has undergone over time. [Pg.325]
