An extremely important safety issue with respect to ah. wood product manufacturing processes is personal worker safety. Ah of the processes use much moving machinery, usuahy including many saws or knives. Workers must continuahy remember the inherent dangers these machines involve as weh as other possible dangerous situations which could result from malfunctions or other errors. In addition, most processes are more or less dusty and noisy. Skin redness and from slight to corrosive irritation is caused by direct contact. Acryhc acid is more corrosive than esters. The monomers not only irritate the skin, but may also be absorbed through the skin. No internal piping and no conventional filter valve are needed with single-cell dmm filters where the entire dmm also operates under vacuum. The cake discharge is effected by air blowback from an internal stationary shoe mounted inside the dmm at the point of discharge. There are very close tolerances between the inside surface of the dmm and the shoe in order to minimize the leakage. The inside of the dmm acts as a receiver for the separation of air and filtrate conventional multicompartment dmm filters require a separate external receiver. Sintering has been used to produce a porous polytetrafluoroethylene (16). Cellulose sponges are the most familiar cellular polymers produced by the leaching process (123). Sodium sulfate crystals are dispersed in the viscose symp and subsequently leached out. Polyethylene (124) or poly(vinyl chloride) can also be produced in cellular form by the leaching process. The artificial leather-tike materials used for shoe uppers are rendered porous by extraction of salts (125) or by designing the polymers in such a way that they precipitate as a gel with many holes (126). [Pg.408]

Cellular mbber has been used extensively as shoe soles, where its combination of cushioning abiUty and wear resistance, coupled with desirable economics, has led to very wide acceptance. In this case the cushioning properties are of minor importance compared with the abrasion resistance and cost. The fiber stmcture is very fine near the surface of the skin and this fine stmcture imparts a silky feel to the leather. The smaller the animal of a given species the finer the surface fibers. The value of the skin or hide is then dependent in part on this smoothness (2). Calfskin leathers are smoother and have a silkier feel than cattle hide leathers. Calfskin leather is used in the shoe uppers of high quahty, expensive men s and women s shoes, and specialty items. [Pg.81]

Splitting. In most modem large tanneries that make upholstery leather, and in some that make shoe uppers leather, the hides are spHt in the lime condition. In splitting the hides are cut to the desired thickness with a horizontal belt knife. The hides are fed into the machine grain up. The clearance between the grain and the blade is maintained by a series of narrow rollers supported by a mbber roUer underneath the spacing roUers. The grain layer is then cut to the thickness desired to an accuracy of about 0.1 mm. [Pg.83]

The grain layer is the most valuable part of the hide and serves as the outside of the shoe. Splitting aUows the grain layer to spread to the maximum area yield and also aUows an efficient use of the valuable tanning chemicals. [Pg.83]

Buffiag may be only to remove surface blemishes such as iasect bites or minor healed scratches, or the buffing may be to make a suede surface. Newbuck is a light suedeiag of the grain of catde hide leather. Sheepskin suede is usually buffed on the flesh side of the skin. SpHts may be buffed to make buck shoe leather or heavy garment leather, often called ranch hide. The variations depend on the desires of the customer. [Pg.85]

In the second quarter of the twentieth century, with the development of poly(vinyl chloride), nylon, polyurethane, and other polymers, many new and improved leather-like materials, so-called coated fabrics (qv), were placed on the market. Shortages of leather after World War 11 led to the expansion of these leather-like materials ("man-made" leathers) to replace leather in shoes, clothing, bags, upholstery, and other items. Tetrahydronaphthalene [119-64-2] (Tetralin) is a water-white Hquid that is insoluble in water, slightly soluble in methyl alcohol, and completely soluble in other monohydric alcohols, ethyl ether, and most other organic solvents. It is a powerhil solvent for oils, resins, waxes, mbber, asphalt, and aromatic hydrocarbons, eg, naphthalene and anthracene. Its high flash point and low vapor pressure make it usehil in the manufacture of paints, lacquers, and varnishes for cleaning printing ink from rollers and type in the manufacture of shoe creams and floor waxes as a solvent in the textile industry and for the removal of naphthalene deposits in gas-distribution systems (25). The commercial product typically has a tetrahydronaphthalene content of >97 wt%, with some decahydronaphthalene and naphthalene as the principal impurities. [Pg.483]
