Shipping materials

Labels are mostly small versions of placards. Labels may be found not only on metal containers, but also those made of wood, plastic, carboard, and even paper bags. Since federeil labels require only one label on the outside of shipping containers, labels may not be visible due to the way they are loaded. Containers eire also sometimes intentionally mislabled to prevent identification of illegally shipped material. 

No radionuclidic contaminants of other elements have been observed in the shipped material. Of course, Sr-85 is always present and Sr-83 is present at short intervals after the irradiation. The presence of Sr-83 in the product leads to the formation of Rb-83 in the eluant from the generator. Large quantities of Sr-85 cause problems in shielding the generator. The best way to ship material is live. Insects Drosophila, in particular) can be sent on small amounts of food in vials. Most marine organisms can be shipped live in sealed plastic bags. On receipt of the organisms, however, prompt treatment of the shipment is required. Specimens obtained for rearing should be placed in proper rearing media. Specimens obtained for protein or DNA extraction should be immediately and rapidly frozen at or below —70°. Frozen tissue should be shipped on dry ice. A much more convenient way to send tissue, however, is in 70-95% ethanol. The DNA yield and quality from specimens sent in ethanol are usually almost as good as from fresh or frozen tissue. Sperm can be shipped on wet ice if it is collected dry (i.e., undiluted in water) and if sodium azide is added to a final concentration of 0.01 -0.02% in order to prevent bacterial growth.13... 

Other polychlorinated anisoles, such as 2,3,4,6-tetrachloroanisole or the pentachloroanisoles exhibit sensory characteristics similar to TCA but have been found at much smaller levels, and mostly in combination with TCA in contaminated wines. Shipping accidents may result in spills of oil, bilge water, and loss of shipped materials. The frequencies of accidents range from 1 x 10 to 2 x 10 per ship per year. Accidents are more Hkely to occur in coastal waters [168] and those involving oils are twice as frequent as those involving chemicals. However, of the latter, chemicals carried in bulk are of greatest concern. As mentioned previously, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has a database of such chemicals.

Through a combination of existing moisture content, moisture buildup, and small particle size, cargoes may liquefy and become viscous fluids. Vibration and the motion of transportation will aid mixing and cause instability, particularly in bad weather, possibly to the point of capsizing the ship. Materials prone to liquefaction include mineral concentrates, other fine particulates, and cargoes already high in moisture such as fish and peat. 

Contractual agreements with major OEMs often require that the material under transaction meet the specifications set forth by the OEM for the incoming material, as part of the quality assurance effort. The resin supplier is required to demonstrate that the shipped material is within the specification. The testing involved is dependent on the OEM and targeted application, to provide proof of compliance. 

Analysis should develop maps that show hazardous materials sources and impact areas. For shipped materials, planners need to know the form of transportation and the type of containers involved. Maps should show transportation corridors and zones of release to identify the locations potentiaUy impacted by leaks and spiUs. 

Each container of reference standard should be labeled by name or Chemical Abstracts (CA) number, log or batch number (as provided by the supplier), expiration or reassay date (if any) and storage conditions necessary to maintain the identity, strength, purity and composition of the reference standard. Observations related to receipt of shipped materials and any unresolved discrepancies should be documented. AU shipment papers such as bUls of lading and express shipment forms should be retained and stored with the rest of the project or study data. 

Shipping materials that can be classified as LSA are often less restrictive than shipping the materials as Type A or Type B. In particular, shipping materials as LSA allows for the use of a wider variefy of packagings that are often more versatile and less expensive than Type A or Type B packagings. These packaging options will be discussed after the discussion of SCOs because the packaging options for LSA and SCO are similar. 

The initial investment for a facility to perform dating irradiations involves the in-core irradiation facilities. Most reactors already have such irradiation positions. For the analysis of older rocks, a Cd lined facility is not required. For the analysis of young rocks, it is essential. If such a facility is not available, it could be installed for a few thousand dollars or less. The only recurring expense is for irradiation capsules and shipping materials.

This test is one of the very first tests to happen as the new material arrives in the shop. The laminate is inspected for its appearance and visual quality. Often the materials engineer will be able to assess the quality of the product without applying specification guidelines. Even packaging and shipping materials should be used to assess the laminator s overall quality control.
