Top 23 hazardous materials shipped by rail

According to the Association of American Railroads (AAR), over 70% of hazardous materials are transported in tank cars. In 2000, there were 994 nonaccident releases of hazardous materials from railcars. Tank cars were responsible for 88% of those releases. Figure 1.3 shows the top 23 hazardous materials shipped by rail. In 2000, there were 72 train accidents involving hazardous materials cars. During these accidents, there were no fatalities and one injury. The tank car shipments by DOT hazard class, with number of leaks by hazard class, are listed in Figure 1.4. [Pg.5]
