The oil and gas industry produces much waste material, such as scrap metal, human waste, unspent chemicals, oily sludges and radiation. All of the incoming streams to a facility such as a production platform end up somewhere, and only few of the outgoing streams are useful product. It is one of the responsibilities of the engineer to try to limit the amount of incoming material which will finally become waste material. 

Fiber-Optic Probes. Fiber-optic probes provide remote sampling capabilities to Raman instmmentation, are stable, and give reproducible signals. Their historical niche has been in environmental monitoring. More recently these probes have been used in chemical process control and related areas such as incoming materials inspection. 

Continuous esterification of acetic acid in an excess of -butyl alcohol with sulfuric acid catalyst using a four-plate single bubblecap column with reboiler has been studied (55). The rate constant and the theoretical extent of reaction were calculated for each plate, based on plate composition and on the total incoming material to the plate. Good agreement with the analytical data was obtained.

Pultrusion is also used to make structural shapes from composite materials. The incoming material is generally unidirectional and must be pulled through the pultrusion die because the uncured composite material is entirely too flexible to push (as in extrusion processes). The incoming material can be preshaped by various guides and rollers as in Figure 1-18. 

After some months of successful operation, the system began rejecting large amounts of incoming materials. There are two primary methods to reduce the number of trial process conditions and at the same time gain more information from the experiments done. The first method to be discussed is based on design of experiments (DOE). The second method, process science, is an offshoot of attempts to improve quality control on incoming materials. Each has advantages and often they are combined.
