In fact, the great response to the paper [1] was caused not by the paper alone and the ideas immediately formulated therein, but rather with the many presentations I.M. Lifshitz made on the subject of the paper at various seminars. His subsequent reports, comments, and remarks at seminars not directly connected with his paper [1] also contributed to the impact of his work. For example, the discussion of the well-known paper of M. Eigen at the seminar of M.V. Volkenstein, the discussion of the report made by A.A. Ne-ufach at the seminar of P.L. Kapitza, and many others can be mentioned here.

Chlorine gas is produced by the electrolysis of brine (sodium chloride) in Castner-Kellner cells (first operated in 1886), the main purpose of which is the production of sodium hydroxide solution. Williams (1972, p98) reports that the extent to which the Castner-Kellner process was worked in Britain depended on the ability to dispose of the chlorine. In this light the production of chlorinated organic compounds can be seen as a response to the need to use chlorine. The argument that we need to produce chlorinated organic compounds to use up chlorine was indeed put to me by manufacturers of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) at a DETR-organized seminar on the lifecycle assessment of PVC in July 2001 PVC is the only product made in sufficient quantities to use up all the chlorine produced by other processes. This suggests that if a particular use of a chemical is stopped, because there is a better (less hazardous) way of achieving that purpose, it will have knock-on effects on the availability of chemicals that are co-produced... 

In this section we describe problems that users of equipment and computer frequently experience during validation and qualification. Problems have been either reported to the author during seminar or conference discussions or have been documented by the FDA in inspection reports and warning letters [22]. In this section we also give recommendations on how to avoid the problems or to resolve them if they occur.
