Many of the currently available studies of metal-metal bonding were completed before the multipole model and the topological analysis of the total density were fully developed. For this reason, the discussions reported below focus on the deformation density distributions, and their comparison with theoretical results, though a more quantitative analysis is now possible and would be of considerable interest. 

Although the discussion reported here will be mainly in reference to titania nanostructured films, the opportunities and problems analyzed are of more general interest and regard how to use the concept of bidimensional nanostructured oxide films to prepare novel catalysts with tailored nano-architectures.

Many of the advances in diagnostics and technology which are discussed in this chapter represent a distinct approach to the better definition of phenomena that are fundamental to the understanding of azides and of explosives in general. Thus behind more macroscopic observations and the discussions reported here there lie direct links back to the microscopic or molecular approaches discussed in Volume 1. 

During WWII, extensive testing of HD was undertaken (by the U.S. Army) for the purpose of evaluating the effectiveness of decontamination and protective equipment. Volunteers in such tests were found to have increased posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD 17% prevalence and 33% subdiagnostic PTSD prevalence) when evaluated 50 years later (Schnurr et al., 1996). The number of exposures to the gas was predictive of lifetime PTSD. No acute exposures to HD or immediate problems were reported. McDonough and Romano, in Chapter 4 of this book, discuss reports of the human volunteer experiments done in the United Kingdom over a 50 year period. They reported that there was no evidence that exposure of volunteers to low doses of nerve agents resulted in any adverse medical sequelae, to include psychiatric symptoms. 

The crystal structure of OA is characterized by a circular conformation that allows the interaction between its carboxylic group and the hydroxyl at carbon C-24. This spatial conformation exposes the methyl groups of OA at carbons C-10 and C-13 at the surface of the molecule, allowing an interaction with the protein phosphatase pi2-pi3 loop. The whole discussion reported above is based on the currently accepted structure of okadaic acid, although the definitive structural conformation has been recently questioned, requiring possible re-evaluation of the sites of interaction of OA with the phosphatase molecules.
