Pyrotechnic material

Propellants and explosives are chemical compounds or mixtures that rapidly produce large volumes of hot gases when properly initiated. Propellants bum at relatively low rates measured in centimeters per second explosives detonate at rates of kilometers per second. Pyrotechnic materials evolve large amounts of heat but much less gas than propellants and explosives (see Pyrotechnics).

Proper safety testing and classification of pyrotechnic energetic capacity will allow the selection of appropriate, remotely operated, cormerciaily available equipment. This equipment can be installed in less costly structures and plant sites for the manufacture of pyrotechnic materials in a safe and economical manner. 

Lattice defects also play a prominent role in the reactivity of pyrotechnic materials, where the displacement or absence of atoms or ions from their normal positions within a lattice can have a pronounced effect on properties, as can the introduction of foreign species or dopants within a crystal. 

Good-quality black powder was being produced in Russia in the 15th century in large amounts, and Ivan the Terrible reportedly had 200 cannons in his army in 1563 [6]. Fireworks were being used for celebrations and entertainment in Russia in the 17th century, with Peter the First among the most enthusiastic supporters of this artistic use of pyrotechnic materials.
