Most public libraries subscribe to database services such as InfoTrac or EBSCO that index articles from hundreds of general-interest periodicals (and some moderately specialized ones). The database can be searched by author or by words in the title, subject headings, and sometimes words found anywhere in the article text. Depending on the database used, hits in the database can result in just a bibliographical description (author, tide, pages, periodical name, issue date), a description plus an abstract (a paragraph summarizing the contents of the article), or the full text of the article itself. 

Deciding how to construct the input layer is application dependent. It is affected by many considerations. Should fixed-length sequence windows or variable-length sequences be used Is there a dependence on positional information Is it intended to search for signal or search for content What is the importance of local information or global information ...

The ACD/NNMR version 8 content database contains >8300 chemical structures (>21,000 N chemical shifts). These data have been culled from the literature and checked for quality according to a number of stringent criteria prior to adding to the database. The chemical shift reference is homogenized during the process such that all shifts are relative to one reference. A record includes the chemical structure, the original literature reference, the N chemical shift(s) and, where available, associated heteronuclear coupling constants. These data can be searched by structure, substructure. 

In addition to the regular trades and press releases, the database includes content from local, national, and international newspapers, government publications, and market research studies. Users can search by SIC and NAICS codes, company name, trade name, or geographic location. It is updated daily. Retrospective coverage goes back to 1972. 

PubChem Compound contains the unique chemical structure content of PubChem Substance. Compounds may be searched by computed chemical properties and are pre-clustered by structure comparison into identity and similarity groups. Whenever possible, compounds are linked via PubChem Substance to information on their biological activities. 

Hind HI fragments F, E. D and G were sequenced by a DNA sequencer utilizing four fluorescent-dye primers. The directions and loci of these fragments were confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The GC content in the region sequenced was 50% that is lower than that of R. rubrum chromosomal DNA but higher than those of chloroplast DNAs. More than 10 000 databases exist that provide a small or large amount of data on various topics (including chemistry). The contents in databases are supplied by approximately 3500 database developers (e.g., the Chemical Abstracts Service, MDL Information Systems, etc.). Since there is a variety of topics from economics to science, as well as a variety of structures of the database, only some of the vendors (-2000) offer one or more databases as either local or as online databases (Figure 5-4) [4]. The reinaining five search topics (Research Topic, Author Name, Document Identifier, Company Namc/Organii ation, and Browse Table of Contents arc conducted in a similar fashion, with the input being the only difference between the criteria. Thus, in Research Topic" the entry can be any, or even several, keywords or phrases. In "Author Name", literature written by a specific author will be Found, including alternative spelling, Document Identifier" can also be entered directly in the query.
