Sealing Methods

As a final step, anodized parts must be sealed to ensure corrosion resistance of the anodic coating. Sealing involves plugging the anodic pores completely so contaminants caimot reach the base metal. A variety of sealing methods are used by anodizers (see Sealants). 

Various coupling designs are available to transmit torque from the driver, eg, electric motor, to a pump. In order to contain the pumped fluid inside the pump and prevent the pumpage from leaking, several types of sealing methods are used. A few options are described herein. 

The jet is sealed into the jacket with an ordinary internal seal (Method 1, p. 73), and the side arm is attached at the shoulder the jet must be perfectly central (Figure 53, IIT). 

Compressor Selection To select the most satisfactory compression equipment, engineers must consider a wide variety of types, each of which offers peculiar advantages for particular applications. Among the major factors to be considered are flow rate, head or pressure, temperature limitations, method of sealing, method of lubrication, power consumption, serviceability, and cost. 

All ductwork should be sealed in accordance with SMACNA Class A rating, which requires all seams, joints, fasteners, penetrations, and connections to be sealed. Sealant should be FDA acceptable for the application, and nonhydrocarbon based. Leakage rates as low as 1% total airflow are not uncommon. All ducts passing through a clean room wall or floor should be provided with stainless steel sheet metal collars and sealed at the opening. Details of sealing methods should be provided on the design documents. 

The choice of closure materials is generally dependent on the required processing conditions and die nature of die contents and closure system (i.e. the application and sealing method). 

Where chemical or physical differences can be detected between the two sites, there remains the problem of distinguishing which site is which. For serum transferrin this is helped immensely by the ability to prepare monoferric forms, loaded in either the N- or C-site (198, 200), and to be able to separate them by electrophoresis in 6 Ilf urea, the Makey-Seal method (201). This enabled the so-called A and B sites, differentiated in earlier studies, to be identified with the C- and N-terminal sites, respectively (202). Comparisons of the diferric proteins with N- and C-loaded monoferric transferrins or (more recently) recombinant half-molecules have by now revealed a number of inequivalences.

Some other sealing methods have been employed in egg preservation as wrapping eggs in waxed paper, coating with paraffin, varnishing with collodion, etc., and coating with vaseline. 

Membrane-to-module sealing methods are very important and have been addressed briefly above. Indeed, the functionality of the membrane module is predicated on the assumption that the feed stream is isolated from the permeate stream and the external atmosphere, and that the permeate stream is also isolated from the external atmosphere. This is especially true for a membrane module that will be used to purify hydrogen, since leaks could result in fire or explosion hazards.
