Paper converters

Both functional and decorative coatings can be appHed to paper from latices. The aqueous dispersions can be used on conventional paper converting machinery which usually cannot handle hot melts and solvent coatings. The lack of fire hazard because of absence of solvents is an added advantage of the latex system. 

In the adhesives area, thermoplastic, fatty polyamides are used in hot-melt and heat-seal adhesives for leather, paper, plastic and metal. Blends of EDA- and DETA-based polyamides are suggested for use in metal can seam sealants with improved toughness (234) pressure sensitive adhesives have been formulated with DETA-based polyamides (235) and anionic and cationic suspensoid adhesives are used as heat-seal coatings in paper converting (236). PIP and certain PIP derivatives are used with EDA in some appHcations (237). 

Viscosity of molten wax (ASTM D-3236) is of importance in applications involving coating or dipping processes because it influences the quality of coating obtained. Examples of such applications are paper converting, hot-dip anticorrosion coatings, and taper manufacturing. 

Coatings. The solid dimer polyamide resins are useful as protective coatings and inks on many substrates, especially flexibile ones like polyolefin film, paper, fiberboard, and metal foils. Thus, paper converters use these resins by applying them from solvent by roller-... 

These organic solvent-based adhesives are very easy to apply and find wide application in general industry. Whenever a variety of different materials has to be stuck together quickly and easily, organic solvent-based adhesives will often be the answer. The footwear industry uses them for sticking soles to uppers and many other operations. The automotive industry uses them for stick-on trim and a variety of other jobs. Foam-seat manufacturers use these adhesives in brushable and sprayable form. Paper converters employ solvent-based permanently tacky adhesives in the manufacture of labels and sticky tapes. 

After fibres and fillers, starch is still the third most important raw material for paper making. Various types of modified starches are applied throughout the papermaking process from the wet-end via the size- or film-press to coating and paper converting.

One of the most frequent objective functions used in the literature is the total completion time. This objective function can, however, be of little interest in actual industrial applications. In order driven industries, like the paper converting industry, nothing is manufactured before an order is placed. A suitable objective function to use in order driven industries is therefore preferably based on the tardiness of products ordered. Different customers may then have different weights on the tardiness for each product. The use of tardiness has also an other advantage when it comes to solving times.
