Pollutant concentration maps may be constructed as shown in Fig. 15-5 (14). In this example, elevated levels of ambient particulate matter are associated with population centers. For a given geographic area, isopleths, lines showing equal concentrations of a pollutant, are drawn on a map. Regions of high concentration are quickly identified. More recently Cass, Boone and Macias constructed a very detailed carbon inventory for Metropolitan Los Angeles in order to estimate the amount of primary elemental and organic carbon in this urban area ( ). In this paper we have shown that there is no simple answer to the question posed in the title of this paper. Primary carbon particles dominate the carbonaceous aerosol under certain conditions while substantial secondary carbon may be present at other times. However, the importance of secondary carbon contributions is much less obvious when 24-h samples are examined. With shorter time averaged samples (e.g. 6-h or less) the increase in secondary carbon formation can be more easily detected. Secondary carbon appears to be more important in the summer rather than winter, in the afternoon father than the early morning, and in LA rather than St. Louis. It should be noted that these conditions of increased secondary carbon aerosol formation are also more favorable conditions for photochemical reactions. Our detailed emission inventory Indicates that much more primary carbon exists in the urban aerosol than was thought previously. This is in agreement with the data. Our analysis shows that even on the very smoggy days in the ACHEX study there were times when primary carbon dominated the carbonaceous aerosol. [Pg.266]

Extensive efforts have been made in the environmental monitoring of dioxins from 1989 in biota and sediments and from 1998 in other media until present (Fig. 1.2) (Ministry of the Environment, 2002, Dioxins monitoring in the environment ). It could be seen from these efforts, that emission of dioxins in Japan has been decreasing from 7680-8135 g-TEQ in 1997 to 323-348 g-TEQ in 2005, a 95% reduction from the 1997 level, meeting the reduction target (Ministry of the Environment, 2004, Dioxin emission inventory ). In 2005, 3206 atmospheric samples, 2550 water samples, 1730 sediment samples, 924 ground water samples and 1782 soil samples were analyzed for their dioxin levels. [Pg.8]

HCB was neither imported nor manufactured in South Korea. Domestic emission, therefore, should originate from process such as combustion of organic matters combined with chlorine and from impurities in the production of chemicals and pesticides. HCB emission for 2000 in South Korea was estimated in a preliminary study of emission inventory using top-down approach (KMOE, 2003b). Emissions from some sources in 2005 were determined by measuring concentrations in archived samples originally collected for analysis of PCDDs/DFs in 2001-2003 (KMOE, 2005a). [Pg.62]

Produced HBr is scrubbed by the use of 10 N sodium hydroxide solution to form sodium bromide. For all the runs, the initial inventory is 1.25 L of sodium hydroxide solution. The NaOH solution was sampled at regular intervals and sent to Argonne s Analytical Chemistry Laboratory for analysis. Volume aliquots of solution samples were diluted with reagent water and analysed by ion chromatography to determine bromide. Separate aliquots were diluted with acid addition and analysed by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) to determine calcium. During the data analysis, adjustments are made for the addition of condensed unreacted steam to the neutralisation solution. [Pg.273]

To develop the detailed release inventory, a study team reviewed results from the refinery s monthly mass balance calculation (inputs minus outputs), studied records maintained for compliance with state and federal laws, and undertook a massive sampling program. Mass balance calculations indicated that the refinery had releases of 8400 tons per year. In contrast, compliance records—which cover only those emissions regulated by state or federal law—documented smaller quantities. In addition, emissions of substances covered by the federal Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) were reported to be 371 tons in 1989—or 23 times less than the emissions indicated by the mass balance calculation. [Pg.331]
