Role play activities

Much of the development of the chemistry of sulfanilamidoselenazole derivatives is a result of the important role played by sulfonamides in chemotherapy and more particularly the good activity of sulfathiazoie against bacterial infections. Backer and De Jonge (441 prepared these derivatives by reaction of 2-amino-4-methyl- and 2-aminO-4-phenyl-selenazoles with A -acetylsulfanilic acid chloride in pyridine.. Alkaline... [Pg.248]

Only the surface layers of the catalyst soHd ate generaHy thought to participate in the reaction (125,133). This implies that while the bulk of the catalyst may have an oxidation state of 4+ under reactor conditions, the oxidation state of the surface vanadium may be very different. It has been postulated that both V" " and V " oxidation states exist on the surface of the catalyst, the latter arising from oxygen chemisorption (133). Phosphoms enrichment is also observed at the surface of the catalyst (125,126). The exact role of this excess surface phosphoms is not weH understood, but it may play a role in active site isolation and consequently, the oxidation state of the surface vanadium. [Pg.454]

Atoms and free radicals are highly reactive intermediates in the reaction mechanism and therefore play active roles. They are highly reactive because of their incomplete electron shells and are often able to react with stable molecules at ordinary temperatures. They produce new atoms and radicals that result in other reactions. As a consequence of their high reactivity, atoms and free radicals are present in reaction systems only at very low concentrations. They are often involved in reactions known as chain reactions. The reaction mechanisms involving the conversion of reactants to products can be a sequence of elementary steps. The intermediate steps disappear and only stable product molecules remain once these sequences are completed. These types of reactions are refeiTcd to as open sequence reactions because an active center is not reproduced in any other step of the sequence. There are no closed reaction cycles where a product of one elementary reaction is fed back to react with another species. Reversible reactions of the type A -i- B C -i- D are known as open sequence mechanisms. The chain reactions are classified as a closed sequence in which an active center is reproduced so that a cyclic reaction pattern is set up. In chain reaction mechanisms, one of the reaction intermediates is regenerated during one step of the reaction. This is then fed back to an earlier stage to react with other species so that a closed loop or... [Pg.16]

The stability of the phosphine adducts is notable as is the fact that thioethers readily form such adducts whereas ethers do not. Bis-ligand adducts of moderate stability play an important role in activating decaborane for several types of reaction to be considered in moie detail in subsequent paragraphs, e.g. ... [Pg.163]

For both mentors and mentees, training is active and involves a lot of discussion, role-plays and practical exercises. [Pg.96]

Companies that did not encourage mentors and mentees to express their mutual expectations of the relationship later tended to recognize this as a mistake. Virtually all companies designed their training in an active style, which involved discussions and sometimes also role-plays and exercises. [Pg.112]

TNF. Tumor necrosis factor. TNFs are among the important cytokines playing a key role in activation and induction of some immune system cells and cellular immunity processes responsible for proinflammatory and inflammatory response reactions as well. [Pg.251]

In the presence of tin, the number of active platinum sites seems to be superior compared to catalyst B and thus an increase in the space velocity by a factor of ten does not seem to saturate all the sites. These results show the importance of the role played by tin since platinum loading was the same in both cases. It is reasonable to think that in the case of catalyst B, due to the method of deposition, some aggregates of platinum are formed on the surface of the catalyst. In the presence of tin, a part of the aggregates could disappear and some Pt/Sn alloy particles, better dispersed at the surface, could be formed. [Pg.84]

Heterogeneous recombination of active particles and their interaction with molecules of the adlayer are simplest processes of this type. The rates of such reactions as functions of surface coverage by the specified reagents are fully determined by the rate of their surface diffusion towards active centers. In a number of cases, the rate of lateral diffusion is determined not only by the type of diffusing particle, but also (sometimes, predominantly) by the composition and state of the solid substrate surface. Taking into account the role played by the composi-... [Pg.239]

For pure water, [H+] = [OH ] and pH = 7. Any solution with pH = 7 is by definition a neutral solution. No matter what other solutes occur in a given solution, the product of hydrogen and hydroxide ion activities will always be 1CT14 at 25 °C. This may be noted that the value of this equilibrium constants alter with temperature, as do all equilibrium constants. For this reason at 230 °C, K = 10 11/1 and a neutral solution would have a pH of 5.7. This brief diversion specifically focusing attention on the ionic compositional aspects of water is quite relevant with regard to its role played as a leaching agent. [Pg.466]

However, there are a number of other miscellaneous biological roles played by this complex. The [Co(NH3)6]3+ ion has been shown to inhibit the hammerhead ribozyme by displacing a Mn2+ ion from the active site.576 However, [Co(NH3)6]3+ does not inhibit ribonuclease H (RNase),577 topoisomerase I,578 or hairpin ribozyme,579 which require activation by Mg2+ ions. The conclusions from these studies were that an outer sphere complex formation between the enzyme and Mgaq2+ is occuring rather than specific coordination of the divalent ion to the protein. These results are in contrast to DNase I inhibition by the same hexaammine complex. Inhibition of glucose-induced insulin secretion from pancreatic cells by [Co(NH3)6]3+ has been found.580 Intracellular injection of [Co(NH3)6]3+ into a neurone has been found to cause characteristic changes to the structure of its mitochondria, and this offers a simple technique to label neuronal profiles for examination of their ultrastructures.581... [Pg.58]
