Supportive role

Two members selected from the team act in supportive roles during the PHA. These roles are the leader and the scribe. A team leader is always needed for a PHA and should double as the scribe only for extremely simple hazard evaluations. For more complex analyses or the HAZOP study method, a separate person should always be assigned to scribe. 

Some 20 years after the pressure for the creation of the new interdisciplinary laboratories was first felt, one of the academics who became involved very early on. Prof. Rustum Roy of Pennsylvania State University, wrote eloquently about the underlying ideal of interdisciplinarity (Roy 1977). He also emphasised the supportive role played by some influential industrial scientists in that creation, notably Dr. Guy Suits of GE, whom we have already encountered, and Dr. William Baker of Bell Laboratories who was a major force in pushing for interdisciplinary materials research in industry and academe alike. A magisterial survey by Baker (1967), under the title Solid State Science and Materials Development, indicates the breadth and scope of his scientific interests. 

Many important refinery operations are not directly involved in the production of hydrocarbon fuels but serve in a supporting role. Some of the major supporting processes are described below.

The nature of the neurochemical impairment underlying depressive illness remains elusive. There is a great deal of evidence supporting roles for the 5-HT system and the HPA axis. However the evidence is less clear that an abnormality in one system alone can explain the full extent of the clinical features of depressive illness. Subtle abnormalities in the interactions between the HPA axis and the serotonergic system may lead to profound alterations in the functioning of both systems, and it may be this that results in the range of symptoms found in mood disorders.

" The interplay of theory and experiment, as well as the mumally supporting roles of preparative wet chemistry and instrumental techniques, are emphasized.
