Many techniques are available, both quahtative and quantitative, some of which are hsted in the following section. Reviews done early in projects often result in easier, more effective changes.

A number of calculators are available on the Internet to estimate a patient s risk of developing breast cancer. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has an online version of the Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Tool that is considered to be the most authoritative and accurate standard (www.cancer.gov/ bcrisk-tool). The Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Tool was designed for health professionals to project a women s individualized risk for invasive breast cancer over a 5-year period and over her lifetime. 

It is clear that patients with febrile neutropenia represent a heterogeneous group. Some patients are at lower risk and potentially could be treated as outpatients, thereby avoiding the risk and cost of hospitalization. The Multinational Association for Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) has validated a risk-assessment tool that assigns a risk score to patients presenting with febrile neutropenia7 (Table 96-3). Patients with a risk-index score of 21 or greater are identified as low risk and are candidates for outpatient therapy (discussed under Treatment ).

Crawley and Grant (1997) have developed a risk assessment tool for new offshore installations. They have examined typical leak frequencies of equipment items and the ignition probability of these leaks in four pressure bands. In off-shore installations gas separation vessels were found to have ten times higher ignited event frequency than oil pumps.

A distinguishing characteristic of Total Diet Surveys like the NZTDS (Cressey et al., 2000) is that foods are analysed as normally consumed (e.g. bananas peeled, meat cooked etc.). They therefore frequently provide the most relevant means of assessing the consumer s exposure. A Total Diet Survey is essentially a public health risk assessment tool, and not a compliance monitoring tool. 

Where effects are known to be dependent on pulsed exposures, and the temporal nature of the exposures is modeled or measured, the exposures can be characterized using a tool such as the Risk Assessment Tool to Evaluate Duration and Recovery (RADAR), developed as part of the efforts of ECOFR AM (ECOFRAM1999 Reinert et al. 2002). This tool provides information on pulse magnitude, duration, and interpulse interval, which is particularly useful for assessing likely effects on classes of organisms with known recovery times and time-exposure responses.
