Recovery time

Clinical evaluation is underway to test transvenous electrodes. Transvenous leads permit pacemakers to be implanted under local anesthesia while the patient is awake, greatly reducing recovery time and risk. As of 1996, the generation of implantable defibrillators requires a thoracotomy, a surgical opening of the chest, in order to attach electrodes to the outside of the heart. Transvenous electrodes would allow cardiologists to perform pacemaker procedures without a hospital or the use of general anesthesia. 

The Class I antiarrhythmic agents inactivate the fast sodium channel, thereby slowing the movement of Na" across the cell membrane (1,2). This is reflected as a decrease in the rate of development of phase 0 (upstroke) depolarization of the action potential (1,2). The Class I agents have potent local anesthetic effects. These compounds have been further subdivided into Classes lA, IB, and IC based on recovery time from blockade of sodium channels (11). Class IB agents have the shortest recovery times (t1 ) Class lA compounds have moderate recovery times (t 2 usually <9 s) and Class IC have the longest recovery times (t 2 usually >9 s).

Tests have shown that when total strain is plotted against the logarithm of the total creep time (ie NT or total experimental time minus the recovery time) there is a linear relationship. This straight line includes the strain at the end of the first creep period and thus one calculation, for say the 10th cycle allows the line to be drawn. The total creep strain under intermittent loading can then be estimated for any combinations of loading/unloading times. 

The total creep strain after the stress of 10.5 MN/m has been applied for the 11th time would be 0.121 -I- 0.747 = 0.868%. Now tests have shown that a plot of total creep strain plotted against the logarithm of the total creep time (i.e. ignoring the recovery times) is a straight line which includes the point edT). 

Loss of offsite power at nuclear power plants is addressed in EPRI NP-2301, 1982 giving data on the frequency of offsite power loss and subsequent recoveiy at nuclear power plants. Data analysis includes point estimate frequency with confidence limits, assuming a constant rate of occurrence. Recovery time is analyzed with a lognormal distribution for the time to recover.
