Breast development

Analysis of ESRB 7 mice showed fewer and smaller litters than wild type mice as well as abnormal vascular function and hypertension. The reduction in fertility was attributed to reduced ovarian efficiency. Mutant females had normal breast development and lactated normally. Older mutant males displayed signs of prostate and bladder hyperplasia. s -2-deficient mice furthermore display diverse regulatory defects in the function of brain, lung, and white blood cells. The results indicated that ESRB is essential for normal ovulation efficiency but is not essential for lactation, female or male sexual differentiation, or fertility.

Klinefelter syndrome (47,XXY) is seen in approximately 1 in 1,000 males (all individuals with this condition have a male phenotype because they have a Y chromosome). Klinefelter males are nearly always sterile because of atrophy of the seminiferous tubules. They tend to be taller than average, with abnormally long arms and legs. Failure of Ovarian Development. Occasionally, the ovaries fail to undergo normal development because of hypopituitarism or other disorders. Estrogens may be given at the time of puberty to encourage development of secondary sexual characteristics (e.g., breast development).

FUNCTION Stimulates breast development and lactose synthesis in pregnancy, among other functions. 

Hypervitaminosis E. This is a relatively safe vitamin. Toxicities have been reported involving chronic administration of 300-1200 mg per day. The symptoms can be very serious and include thrombophlebitis, pulmonary embolism, hypertension, breast development in men and children, severe fatigue, and nonmalignant breast tumors. Nevertheless, the UL to RDA ratio is about 66 to 1 for adults, making it a very safe vitamin.
