The development of an atopic condition has been associated with the generation of predominately Th2 biased immune response to the particular allergen, and is thus often referred to as a Th2 based disease (Romagnani, 1994). 

IL-4 plays a key role in the response of a T-helper cell (TH-2), which activates I -producing B cells, eosinophils, and mast cells. This IL-4 response is of great medical interest, because it is associated with allergic, inflammatory reactions, with asthma, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and dermatitis. Therefore, the structure of the IL-4-receptor complex may help in the development of a more effective therapy of allergies (Fig. 6.7).

People with asthma may be particularly sensitive to acetylsalicylic acid, which may be given alone or as a constituent of a combination medicine. The association between aspirin sensitivity, nasal polyps, and rhinitis in asthma is well known.
