5 Therapy Effect. The effect of thrombolytic therapy on metabolic changes was studied in rat brains submitted to thromboembolic stroke by a MRSI. Temporal changes in the cerebral methabolites lactate and N-acetylaspartate (NAA) were determined. In individual pixels, the probability of metabolic tissue recovery clearly declined with increasing lactate concentration before thrombolysis. 

Laser therapy by low light doses shows promising results in the modulation of some cell functions. However, the mechanism behind it is still not completely understood. To explore the effect of a low-power diode laser (= 780 nm) on normal skin tissue, time-dependent contrast enhancement has been determined by MRI. Fractionation of radiation therapy effects dose. Conventional fractionation consists of five 2 Gy fractions per week, which allows up to 70 Gy to be delivered to a limited mediastinal volume. Pignon et al. performed a meta-analysis, and included 13 randomized trials (24). The fractionation dose varied between 2 and 4 Gy. The analysis revealed that as the fraction got larger the toxicities increased (24).

For the eradication of Helicobacter pylori in peptic ulceration, omeprazole may be combined with antibacterials in dual or triple therapy. Effective triple therapy regimens include omeprazole 20 mg twice daily combined with amoxycillin 500 mg and metronidazole 400 mg, both three times daily clarithromycin 500 mg and metronidazole 40 mg (or tinidazole 500 mg) both twice daily or with amoxycillin 1 g and clarithromycin 500 mg both twice daily. These regimens are given for 1 week. Dual therapy regimens, such as omeprazole 40 mg daily with either amoxycillin 750 mg to 1 g twice daily or clarithromycin 500 mg three times daily, are less effective and must be given for 2 weeks. Omeprazole alone may be continued for a further 4r-8 weeks [1]. 

Improvements in medication by use of acetyl cholinesterase inhibitors and general therapy significantly reduce symptoms at the onset of the disease [3, 4] but do not address the severe mortality in the final stages. A causal therapy is, therefore, still very much in demand, because no existing therapy effectively stops or even cures the disease. Biochemical markers of bone resorption and. formation have a number of potential uses" including (1) monitoring the effectiveness of therapy, (2) selection of patients for therapy, (3) prediction of bone loss, and (4) prediction of fracture risk. Of these, bone markers are currently most used for monitoring the effectiveness of therapy. Effective anti-resorptive therapy is followed by a significant reduction in resorption markers within few weeks, normally reaching a plateau within 3 to 6 months. Markers of bone formation respond more slowly, usually reaching a plateau at 6 to 12 months. Depending on the antiresorptive therapy and the bone marker, effective therapy is associated with a bone marker reduction of 20% to 80%. 

Employs drug usage evaluation information to alter therapy effectively. Participates in drug use evaluation programs.

However, the flow cytometers are bulky and expansive, and are available only in large reference laboratories. In addition, the required sample volumes are quite large, usually in the 100 pL range. Many clinical applications require frequent blood tests to monitor patients status and the therapy effectiveness. It is highly desirable to use only small amount of blood samples Ifom patients for each test. Furthermore, it is highly desirable to have affordable and portable flow cytometry instruments for field applications, point-of-care applications and applications in resource-limited locations. To overcome these drawbacks and to meet the increasing needs for versatile cellular analyses, efforts have been made recently to apply microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip technologies to flow cytometric analysis of cells.
