Thus, serum IgE levels may correlate with severity of asthma, but the data are not consistent. There is some evidence to suggest that serum IgE level in children may predict those in whom asthma will persist. In a longitudinal study of 540 children by Sherrill et al., higher mean serum IgE levels in children less than 1 year old were associated with higher mean semm IgE levels at ages 6 and 11 years and persistent wheezing (50). More longitudinal data of IgE and asthma associated clinical outcomes are needed to more fully understand the relationship between IgE levels and severity of asthma. [Pg.15]

A number of studies indicate that irreversible airflow obstruction may occur in asthma, associated with structural changes consistent with an airway remodeling process (153).
