Reye s Syndrome

Acute toxicoses, as well as potential long-term effects of aflatoxki ingestion, have been extensively reported (93). Autopsy reports have noted a positive correlation between aflatoxki B and victims of Reye s Syndrome ki Thailand (94), but this evidence should only be considered as suggestive and preliminary (95). [Pg.480]

Although extraordinary in its powers, aspirin is also more dangerous than commonly believed. Only about 15 g can be fatal to a small child, and aspirin can cause stomach bleeding and allergic reactions in long-term users. Even more serious is a condition called Reye s syndrome, a potentially fatal reaction to aspirin sometimes seen in children recovering from the flu. As a result of these problems, numerous other NSAIDs have been developed in the last several decades, most notably ibuprofen and naproxen. [Pg.537]

Studies suggest that the use of salicylates (especially aspirin) maybe involved in the development of Reye s syndrome in children with chickenpox or influenza. This rare but life-threatening disorder is characterized by vomiting and lethargy, progressing to coma. Therefore, use of salicylates in children with chickenpox, fever, or flulikesymptomsisnot recommended. Acetaminophen is recommended for the management of symptoms associated with these disorders... [Pg.156]

Antiemetics and antivertigo drag s are used cautiously in patients with glaucoma or obstructive disease of the gastrointestinal or genitourinary system, those with renal or hepatic dysfunction, and in older men with possible prostatic hypertrophy. Piromethazine is used cautiously in patients with hypertension, sleep apnea, or epilepsy. Trimethobenzamide is used cautiously in children with a viral illness because it may increase the risk of Reye s syndrome... [Pg.311]

Vaccinations containing live organisms are not administered within 3 months of immune globulin administration because antibodies in the globulin preparation may interfere with the immune response to the vaccination. Corticosteroids, antineoplastic dru, and radiation therapy depress the immune system to such a degree that insufficient numbers of antibodies are produced to prevent the disease. When the salicylates are administered with the varicella vaccination, there is an increased risk of Reye s syndrome developing. [Pg.580]

The orotic aciduria that accompanies Reye s syndrome probably is a consequence of the inabifity of severely damaged mitochondria to utifize carbamoyl phosphate, which then becomes available for cytosofic overproduction of orotic acid. Type I orotic aciduria reflects a deficiency of both orotate phosphoribosyltransferase and orotidylate decarboxylase (reactions 5 and 6, Figure 34—7) the rarer type II orotic aciduria is due to a deficiency only of orotidylate decarboxylase (reaction 6, Figure 34-7). [Pg.300]

Although rum ammonia levels are not routinely measured, it is a useful indicator of Reye s syndrome and should be monitored in newborns at risk of developing hyperammonemia Ammonia is produced in many analytically useful enzyme reactions and the ammonium ISE has been used as the base sensor in several enzyme electrodes (see next section). In addition to valinomycin, other antibiotics such as the nonactin homalogs and gramicidins also behave as ionophores. The nonactin homolo were originally studied for their ability to selectively bind potassiiun ions It was then discovered that ammonium ions were preferred over potassium ions, and the selectivity coefficient Knh+ = 0.12 was reported. Since ammonia is present at fairly low levels in serum, this selectivity is not sufficient to to accurately measure NH4 in the presence of K. An extra measure of selectivity can be gained by using a gas permeable membrane to separate the ammonia gas from the sample matrix... [Pg.61]

Reye s syndrome A sudden, sometimes fatal, syndrome characterized by encephalopathy and liver degeneration it occurs in children after viral infection and may be associated with aspirin use. [Pg.1576]

Fatty acid oxidation defects often produce recurrent disturbances of brain function [4, 8]. Drowsiness, stupor and coma occur during acute metabolic crises and mimic the Reye s syndrome phenotype. The neurological symptoms have been attributed to hypoglycemia, hypoke-tonemia and the deleterious effects of potentially toxic... [Pg.705]

Complications of influenza may include exacerbation of underlying comorbidities, primary viral pneumonia, secondary bacterial pneumonia or other respiratory illnesses (e.g., sinusitis, bronchitis, otitis), encephalopathy, transverse myelitis, myositis, myocarditis, pericarditis, and Reye s syndrome. [Pg.463]

Children between 6 months and 18 years old who are receiving longterm aspirin therapy, placing them at risk for Reye s syndrome following influenza. [Pg.464]

In children, aspirin should be avoided and acetaminophen used as the preferred agent because of the possible association between aspirin use and the development of Reye s syndrome. [Pg.479]

Aspirin-like compounds should not be given to children or teenagers with influenza or chickenpox, as Reye s syndrome may result. [Pg.629]

Aspirin is avoided in breast-feeding because of the possibility of Reye s syndrome. Moreover if high doses of aspirin are used, the neonate may develop hypoprothrombinaemia. Benzodiazepines such as diazepam are present in milk and therefore should be avoided during breast-feeding. Amoxicillin can be safely administered during pregnancy and breast-feeding. [Pg.121]

The U.S. pain reliever market is estimated at 2.5 billion. Aspirin s share has recently decreased from 60% in 1983 to 28% in 1996, but this share is now stabilized. Acetaminophen has 48% of the market and ibuprofen 24%. Aspirin may be back on the upswing. After earlier reports that it was linked to Reye s syndrome in children, the recent news is that a single aspirin tablet taken every other day halves the risk of heart attacks among healthy men. [Pg.453]

Children and teenagers should not use salicylates for chickenpox or flu symptoms before a doctor is consulted about Reye s syndrome, a rare but serious illness. [Pg.909]

Children Safety and efficacy of magnesium salicylate or salsalate have not been established. Administration of aspirin to children (including teenagers) with acute febrile illness has been associated with the development of Reye s syndrome. [Pg.913]

Acetylsalicylic ac/cf. Acetylsalicylic acid has been associated with Reye s syndrome. Because diflunisal is a salicylic acid derivative, the possibility of its association with Reye s syndrome cannot be excluded. [Pg.917]

By reacting with bacterial H2S the oral cavity and feces will be colored black. Bismuth and also salicylate when bismuth subsalicylate is used, are to a minor degree absorbed. Children should not take bismuth subsalicylate while recovering from the fiu or chicken pox, as epidemiologic evidence points to an association between the use of salicylate containing medications during certain viral infections and the onset of Reye s syndrome. [Pg.379]

Aspirin is epidemiologically associated with Reye s syndrome, a rare but often fatal consequence of infection with varicella, influenza and various other viruses, and salicylates are therefore contraindicated in children with chicken pox or influenza. [Pg.439]

Recommended antipyretics are paracetamol, acetylsalicylic acid and short acting NSAIDs to adults. Children under the age of 18 should not be treated with acetylsalicylic acid due to an increased risk of Reye s syndrome in viral infections. [Pg.499]
